Netflix like product for school?

Hello,

 

Does anyone know if such a product exists please? I am after a service like Netflix that will allow us to stream movies. Optical drives in computers are becoming more difficult to find so I need to start thinking about the next step.

We've been using ClickView for a number of years. It's very cloud based now but you can still have a machine on your network that acts as a local cache so you can stream from that rather than hammering your Internet Connection. The 'Exchange' element has a massive library of videos, movies, etc you can view and it integrates with O365 SSO so users can access it at home as well as your local network.

It can do yes - If it's been on FTA TV, it's likely to be on the clickview exchange (Where other schools over the years have saved a recording from TV) - Saving private ryan is on there.

I’m not sure what the availability is in the UK but…

 

 

We subscribed to CCC streaming in the past, it has a large education focused video library. We did not renew because it was not used very much, most teachers went to youtube.

I have heard of discover video but it’s expensive by comparison.

 

I’m not sure the legal copyright aspects but if you already have the content on the network take a look at emby. I use it at home and as of May they introduced ldap to the paid version.

I suspect if you already own a copy it would be OK but I don’t know what the latest is on format shifting.

Along with what he said, their data centre has a number of servers recording 24/7 most of the FTA channels where you can then pick out and keep anything that's been recording usually within the last three weeks. They also contain a number of European channels as well which our MFL teachers got very excited about. Nice little feature is that you can request an Ad-Free version of anything that is being recorded and they have a member of staff in Australia who will remove all the adverts for you.

 

The Feature Film section is massive now - as longs as its been FTA then it may well be on there. You can upload your own stuff as well.

Just thinking about this - is this really about replacing how teachers play DVDs at the end of the term for example? Surely it's the same as at home - VHS was replaced with DVDs which were replaced with bluray which were replaced with streaming services like, Netflix, Amazon, Apple, Rakuten, etc.

Some of our staff login to their personal (Netflix, Amazon,..) accounts. This is not something I would encourage.

Netflix et al say very clearly in their terms and conditions that they’re for personal use only. Add up that, the various licenses that schools hold for showing video in the classroom don’t cover the streaming services. It’s for those reasons that I’ve blocked Prime and Netflix where I work. If they want to show a video, they can show a DVD as far as I’m concerned.

I don't mean too expensive. I mean it had a ton of features we are not wanting.

We got e-stream for the digital display system. The video library came along for the ride Don't discount it because it has too many features!

 

Once you have it, several problems/challenges you may encounter can be solved by it. Before e-stream, those problems would require another system/purchase, a time consuming (but satisfying) hack, or not be solved.

 

For us access to the BBC Archive ("Connect") is the most used feature, then as a video library for OTA/MPLC licensed films/programmes etc, and finally some departments use it to moderate Sports/Drama performance.

Plex is like a Netflix product with empty library's you fill your self. It would work perfectly but i do not know what you do about the whole media shifting and copyright. If you apply for copyright on each film you could legally put each one you need on Plex.

If you get a licence to copy/redistribute it, you have the right to copy. You know what was implied.

It makes perfect sense - if you want to copy/rip a DVD that you do not own the copyright to then you need to apply for permission to copy it.

We also use Planet eStream, big fan. Their technical support is really good, probably the best experience out of our bunch of various suppliers. With their recent 'connect' service, there's loads of films that have been captured when broadcasted on freeview over the last few years and can be downloaded to our local server overnight; with the reassurance it's legal to use in a classroom environment or to use for flip learning provided you have the right licenses. Also they show the most downloaded content from Connect every week from other schools which I sometimes look at and think hey that'll be good for us too. We can also upload our own videos, which is really easy for the teachers to do themselves (albeit do have to keep an eye on where they obtained the videos from). Also comes with digital signage features which we also use.
