PEO Posted April 20, 2008 Posted April 20, 2008 (edited) Hi gang, My girlfriends dad approached me today asking me how he can get his website on the google search. He said he has managed to get it on the yahoo search but most people tend to use google. I took a quick look at his website WBC. At first glance I think its obvious why he is not getting on the google search nor do I think people would know what the website was at a quick glance. I'm thinking about redesigning the site with joomla but before I do, I was wondering if you could all comment on what is wrong/right etc. cheers Edited April 20, 2008 by MrHappy
dhicks Posted April 20, 2008 Posted April 20, 2008 At first glance I think its obvious why he is not getting on the google search The HTML page itself has no content on it, just a bunch of Javascript functions that load the content. kestrel1 Posted April 20, 2008 Posted April 20, 2008 There are some tips here: How do I add my site to Google's search results? that may help. 1
Ryan Posted April 20, 2008 Posted April 20, 2008 Some random thoughts: email addresses should be clickable should be giving out a post code so ppl can 'google maps' it images have no alt descriptions use of deprecated tags (font, tables for layout, etc etc) email address link jumps about from page to page (and isn't even on one of 'em) That's even before you touch SEO. 1
chrbb Posted April 20, 2008 Posted April 20, 2008 It can take quite a while before a website appears on a google search, my school one took ages. The meta tags look OK on the website. try this to add your website address 1
PEO Posted April 20, 2008 Author Posted April 20, 2008 as i thought... a complete mess excellent feedback
localzuk Posted April 20, 2008 Posted April 20, 2008 just a note - email addresses should not be in text form, or in any machine readable format, else the recipient will receive loads of spam.
Edu-IT Posted April 20, 2008 Posted April 20, 2008 There's no 'design' to it in my opinion. The colour scheme is dull and there's too much white space. There isn't much consistency either. If I'm being honest then it's a mess and if I was you I would start again. Find a suitable colour scheme and get hold of some more images to use. 1
PEO Posted April 21, 2008 Author Posted April 21, 2008 right from the comments im going to report back to him and let him know... still not a bad attempt bless... any more comments most welcome
My220x Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008 It's just plain and boring. Also, I think the "Whitby Brunswick Centre" should be clickable to take us back to the main page. Just noticed that the link back to the home page is not on all pages. I would defiently make it again with Joomla as it will allow everyone to easily edit it while keeping everything the same.
chrbb Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008 TBF if it's his first attempt it's not bad, websites develop over time after it's been live for a while he'll probably tweak it and change various bits to improve it.
StewartKnight Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008 Joomla could certainly make it look better another thing that helps google ranking is if other websites link to yours... apparently!
Ryan Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008 just a note - email addresses should not be in text form, or in any machine readable format, else the recipient will receive loads of spam. Perhaps of use - you can use JavaScript to generate email addresses. It won't be bulletproof, but may help. Ask Google.
