Dos_Box Posted June 25, 2018 Posted June 25, 2018 (edited) As you can see from today's banner, it's the 20th anniversary of Windows 98 becoming available to buy for the general public. I sort of miss the small footprint, upgraded graphics from Windows 95 and more configuration. Lets not talk about the general flakiness, the need to run a disk check almost daily and (very) ropey USB and driver support. So here's to you Windows 98, you made us appreciate all the following versions of Windows all that bit more* *Windows ME and Vista excepted** **Possibly Windows 8 too ***Apologies for the lateness of this post going up (for UK members), we are in Chicago at the ISTE show this week and are quite a few time zones out! MrEprise Posted June 25, 2018 Posted June 25, 2018 Lets not talk about the general flakiness, the need to run a disk check almost daily and (very) ropey USB and driver support. I mean, It might have been because I had Second Edition but I didn't experience many issues really and used it daily for many years. When I first started working at a school (my current one) they were using Windows 98 on all the student machines (and for a few years too) and this gave me chance to work with it on a Domain level which was (wasn't?) fun. So here's to you Windows 99... Erm, whut? 1
mikeprice Posted June 25, 2018 Posted June 25, 2018 Yup - I remember Windows 98 that was in the days when you would expect to have to restart the PC several times a day - just because I was part of a team that was responsible for connecting some PCs to a VMS server - that was fun!! Then Windows NT came along and suddenly all our PC problems went away - PCs stayed up all day - connections to multiple types of machine worked configuration was simple (ish) yeah - Windows 98 - huh
FN-GM Posted June 25, 2018 Posted June 25, 2018 (edited) Erm, whut? Clearly already started his toast to Windows 98 few hours before! :-) Edited June 25, 2018 by FN-GM 1
Dos_Box Posted June 25, 2018 Author Posted June 25, 2018 Clearly already started his glass to Windows 98 few hours before! :-) Jet-lagged typo Fixed now. 1
googlemad Posted June 25, 2018 Posted June 25, 2018 My favourite feature from Windows 98 was the gradient title bars!
BKGarry Posted June 25, 2018 Posted June 25, 2018 Microsoft active desktop. Love that, webpages on your desktop.
vikpaw Posted June 26, 2018 Posted June 26, 2018 i dare to say it.... Can we keep it? I have! Got loads of floppies lying around and probably still at the bottom of my kit bag. 98SE was great for boot from floppy troubleshooting start up. Even when you had to carry a floppy drive with you and plug it in. Them days are gone now. It’s not quite the same with a flashy Win PE CD.
witch Posted June 26, 2018 Posted June 26, 2018 You can sell some floppy disks - blank or used - on ebay. Have a look - search for Floppy Disks and then click "completed items" down the left hand side to see what they have actually sold for (sold price in green)
MatthewL Posted June 26, 2018 Posted June 26, 2018 Really liked Win 98se, took me an age to move to XP at the time.
