How many network drives do you have?

How many network drives do you have? What is kept on them and who are they for?

 

We have 3 drives for staff: Home, Staff Shared and Pupils

2 for pupils: Home and year shared

4 for Admin: home, everyone else, shared, sims

6 for IT: Shared, staff shared, pupils home folders, staff home folders, 1 for our ink stock taking thing

 

Is this normal to everyone else?

Kids: Apps Drive x 2(P/M), Shared Area(W), Home Area(N)

Staff: As above with Staff Shared area (K)

Admin: More than we know what to do with incl. the above and Our shared area under I.

 

EDIT: Add SIMS for Staff/Admin too...

N: - Everybody, Home Drive

P: - Everybody, Public

V: - Everybody, Virtual CD's

S: - Everybody, Shared Area

F: - Sims users only, Sims drive

P: Public

S: Stafffiles

U: Students

 

Plus a few hidden non mapped shares, techfiles, is the most obvious example

Staff get:

 

H: Home drive

I: Ideara - this is a legacy drive, and I plan to get rid of it

O: Netapps - network applications drive

P: Public drive

R: Resources drive

S: SIMS drive

 

Kids get:

 

R: Resources

O: Netapps, but it is hidden

W: Work

 

And soon there will be another, which is for submitting work to.

Staff/Students here have two visible Drives - Shared Area ( O: ) & Home Folder ( H: ).

 

All Staff have a hidden drive for SIMS ( S: )

Finance Staff have a hidden drive for FMS, SchoolFund Manager and other Finance Packages ( N: )

Library Staff have a hidden drive for Alice ( P: )

 

Techie people get the same drives as staff by default and we just map any other drives we want to have manually and it gets stored in our roaming profiles.

 

Certainly a lot easier to manage now that we have reshuffled our data and combined all our logon scripts into one. When I started here three years ago there were ten or so!

As an admin, I usually setup about 12, teachers typically 4 or 5 and pupils generally 1 or 2. It all depends what their requirements are really. Each school sometimes like to arrange data differently.

Ours are as follows:

 

P: - User's home folder(Staff/Students)

O: - Subject specific stuff(Staff Write,Students Read)

S: - School data store(Staff Only)

M: - Staff home folders(Staff has write/read to own, Staff & Students have the ability to 'paste' work onto them)

U: - Students home folders(Staff Only, same kind of setup as M)

 

And then whatever we need on a specialist basis, such as DOS based accounting software has a drive mapped only for finance users.

R: Resource share - locked to only admin can change

S: Staff only

I: My software share which i store all software onto

M: Media share

Q: homework share, can be access from home

Teaching Staff = N: own work T:staff shared W:Shared docs for students to read and copy

S:hidden Sims.

 

Students= N: own work W: shared docs from teaching staff for them to read and copy.

 

All have remote access to their own work area and staff have remote access to Sims

I also have a few other drives mapped for myself:

 

U: - general storage for apps/drivers/documentation etc on the main server

T: - same again but on the sims server, mainly for anything relating to sims

V: - Netlogon

W: mapped to the redirected start menu/desktop location

 

I used to work in schools around the country supporting/installing networks, I'd occasionally setup a scratch drive for network apps that need somewhere to store user records etc

We have a bunch of network drives - legacy from Viglen and CD servers. Actually these are quite useful because they prevent students being able to get to drives unless specifically configured. XP doles out drive letters without dealing with network drives. Now though we're going to put endpoint security into place. Anybody got a perfect solution for getting XP to recognise network drives when picking up new storage devices?
