I need to buy some new POE switchs in readness to power the Harmony Public address/Lockdown/Class change

They are rated at 10-18watts

 

I am looking at having upto 5 per switch in the first phase

THe switch are not going to be rackmounted but fastend/secured above ceilings in corridors

 

So i am looking switch with 8 to 12 POE/POE+ switchs that have all the ports are POE To allow for expansion in phase 2 and 3 next year

Anyone know any good deals/offers

 

I am looking for advice guidance

I am not brand loyal

If you've got cable runs to the locations already, have you thought about just using PoE injectors? Would probably be cheaper than doing a switch upgrade.

 

If you do need new switches look at Ubiquiti's UniFi range for affordable options- pricing here.

 

Be careful to ensure enough air flow to the switches if you are mounting them in the ceiling void. Is it possible to run the cabling back to a central location?

So if your requirement is up to 18w ...you will need poe+ or 802.11at capability...and most if not all of latest generation of “ac” accesspoints require this when fully featured....although most will work at reduced capacity with 802.11af.

Well..you’d have to look at the small print for each manufacturer. They advertise their APs as 802.11af “compatible” but hide away the fact that using them with such power source cripples some of the features. So many have 2 Ethernet sockets to provide a resilience and the notional bandwidth required by “ac”...that is often sacrificed. Some have an extra radio to optimise channel selection etc..that can get disabled. Some can’t use all the streams that would be possible with a 802.11af supply. These things may not be important to to hide these details away because they know it puts customers off from buying them.

We have been recommended to upgrade our older Ruckus APs to R510s which from what I can tell come with ;

 

Two 10/100/1000 Ethernet ports, one with 802.3af Power over Ethernet (PoE)

So should have a full feature set as it doesn't even mention 802.11at

Unifi switches by ubuquiti.

 

Yeah the US-8-150w should have plenty of power across the eight ports for what you need. In areas where you need less poe ports the US-8-60w saves you a few pounds. Both are wall mountable, centrally managed, vlan aware and pretty cheap.

As you are looking to expand an existing network what do you have in place already?

 

Daisy chaining switches to extend networks isn’t good practice, what’s in the cabinets you are going to uplink from?

 

Do you have connectivity back to your core switch?

 

Where is the node that will control the speaker system?

 

What type of datagram/protocols will need to traverse the various uplinks to reach these devices?

 

Are you using VLANs?

 

I have a vision of somebody in the main office pressing a PTT button and flooding the network with multicast packets [emoji23]
