You can use WPAD which will work for most apple and windows devices. Sadly Android doesn't support it though and the user must manually configure a proxy.

 

Any idea where this is on the Controller? cant see it

Are you saying Android doesn't support it via the Ubiquiti guest portal or Android in general doesn't support wpad? I've not set up the Ubiquiti guest access but in general Android supports wpad

 

WPAD has nothing to do with the Unifi guest portal - it's a DHCP thing. From the reading I've done and the last few years of experience I don't believe WPAD works on android - are you suggesting otherwise, because if so I'd be keen to hear?

Guest portal has nothing to do with DHCP/DNS records for WPAD.

The only problem with BYOD and WPAD is explicit configuration of devices that you don't manage. We had to push all BYOD devices through a transparent proxy, otherwise there's nothing stopping a user from using a direct connection

Depends on your infrastructure. We could for example block port 80 and 443 at the edge firewall and only allow a proxy port.

WPAD is implemented at the DHCP and DNS level of your network rather than the unifi controller. This is a handy starting point... https://findproxyforurl.com/wpad-introduction/

 

Yeah its all setup on (WPAD) my network, and works fine if you manually add this to the SSID (if connecting manually on a device) I was wondering if I can put this is to the SSID on the controller?

WPAD address. Am I missing something? I've never had an issue using a WPAD file on an Android device apart from the cheap ones that don't have proxy settings.

WPAD is automatic configuration - no user involvement. I think you;re confusing this with PAC or manually setting a proxy.

 

Yes and no - just tested with my S7 here without issue.

So are most people going with the pro and planning to upgrade to faster in 3 years time? Also would I be ok removing netgear ap and just swapping to unifi units? Any good surveying tools?

We’re pushing a more dense deployment than we might normally due to the audio level of the EDU units - so we don’t need the additional device capability of the HD units. The EDUs are essentially a AC-PRO unit with a speaker attached. I’m not convinced that the HD units will sustain the 500+ clients in a real environment, nor the 200+ claimed of the PRO kit, better to add more APs on lower power in most situations I think if you have a dense device environment. As for speed, both only currently use a single 1gbit up link to my knowledge.

 

Unifi is priced so that if you see a pinch point in a year or two it’s cheap enough to upgrade these areas without a large cap ex bid and you can run a mixed environment easily. You might argue to help with continued improvements and development we should keep buying the hardware.

 

Would it be ok swapping netgear for unifi - probably. Depends on the feature set you’re used to.

 

I’d be interested to hear of heat mapping software too. The tool I used to use is well out of development now.

We went with the pro and it's going to be in there at least 5 years... until it starts to feel slow anyway.

I'm going with the Pros for now in our existing buildings - They are experimenting with a "Nano" wave 2 point in the beta forum on their website which will be a half way house between the AC-Pro and the AC-Pro-HD that if goes into production before our new expansion I'll look into instead.

 

The Edu models are a nice idea, but I have a feeling they were a one time only thing

I don’t think any AP mauafacturer claims “sustaining” such large numbers of clients. Yes that number might be able to connect but getting any meaningful amounts of data to that number of clients ...even to support background data ...would be impossible. The problem stems from the single collision domain which has no collision detection method. So if 1 client could get 200mb/s using a unify HD ap (and this is actual tcp type data, not the udp connection rate which is misleading)you might have 5 clients getting 40mb/s. You might even get 10 clients with 20mb/s. But once you get to around 20 clients instead of the expected 10mb/s you only get around 5mb/s, and 40 clients might struggle to get even 1mb/s.

 

I’d be getting an HD ap and setting it up, nothing to lose...sell it again on eBay if it doesn’t make a massive improvement. Get a free meraki ap to test, most wireless APs can be tested for free. There is no magic right way to deploy APs, but if you want highest speeds 3 to 5 metres unobstructed is what the best claim to get sufficient signal to noise. Yes it will go through walls, but all those high QAM multiple stream speeds disappear. You can compromise, with some rooms without APs but surrounded by other rooms with APs.

I have 41 APs running around 650 clients at any one time. Most of them are Full Windows domain machines.

 

In a Zone (a large Teaching space for 3 class team teaching, 3 classrooms and an office for staff) I have 3 APs, 2 Pros and an in Wall Pro that usually have around 80-100 clients between them and they seem to perform well.

 

Again, my improvements from my move from our Meru system could be put down to going from 802.11n APs to 802.11ac APs and having AC cards already there in the laptops as they have been consistently cheaper than AGN cards for the past 3 years or so.

 

I did once have the entire network pull down a 1.2gb Windows 10 cumulative update from a WSUS server and that did cause an issue for a bit of time, including the WSUS server sharing storage with a DC and Print server, all separate VMs but share host storage, but that would be the same with any manufacturer

Looking in to upgrading our Meru wireless over the next few months, could any one let me know what their tech support is like?, with regards to resolutions\ response times etc..

Unifi? You should perhaps look into it more, they don't offer that sort of managed service; see their forums etc. There's little to go wrong; if something fails, keep a couple of spare APs and swap out etc.

Yes but they do offer a service through their controller software? ,no?
