Umpired my first game in the Norfolk Alliance on Saturday (top level of cricket with the county), all went pretty well and one or two interesting oddities including the batsman who insisted he didn't want the four runs I'd just signalled. It was overthrows and he said he'd (inadvertently) obstructed the wicketkeeper from fielding it. I hadn't seen this as I was watching the stumps at the other end. Very odd.

For his sake, I really hope the other team didn't win by three runs...

That's what I did, I've posted the incident to our umpires' forum to get some thoughts on the event. We gave the poor scorers a hard time as there was also an LBW decision from my colleague which he then reversed.

I can just imagine the chuntering in the scorebox!

There was a bit !

This was in the first innings, the team batting second won. It went to the last over but they always felt in control, maybe the extra runs would have made a difference, but I don't think so.

Boddingtons Village Cricket League

That's the stats for a wednesday night game up here in preston, most notable is:

2

Bobby Parker

b Tom Peterson

That's Tom from our trade team bowling Bobby, our dispatch manager. We haven't stopped hearing about it since!

And Tom's team won, and he outscored Bobby, and Bobby bowled seven wides, and Bobby was bowled which I always think is about the worst way to get out.

I can find enough material there to keep going for a good long while and I wasn't even there !

Yep! Bobby has been in a bad mood since. He also let a shot slip through his legs for four...

Oh might as well fall on his bat then, life can't be worth living.

Yep! If he survives to the return game I'll post the results from that too.

Wednesday 10th July, I shall be watching ! Just noticed it was a clash between two undefeated teams, first defeat of the season adds a little spice to the mix.

Just asked him about this. He says its because he's been saving himself for the Palace Shield 20/20. Tonight is his first game :)

Get him a helmet cam quick ! :-D

To be fair to Bobby, he came in with four balls left in the innings and faced a wide before clipping a single and watching the other batsman face the final three balls.

He's happy with his strike rate of 100 for the game ;)

Oh, OK. I didn't realise we were being fair to Bobby ;-)

I am still useless with the bat.

not bad with the ball.

I seem to have a dodgy arm which is restricting my fielding/throwing arm.

Umpired Norfolk vs Suffolk U13 girls on Sunday. Enjoyable game, although Norfolk were rather outclassed. One of the Suffolk girls got a very nice century which I suspect won't be her last. Personal highlight was Norfolk's opening bowler clean bowling someone and breaking middle stump in half !

It's actually much harder umpiring age group games than adult ones. No aggro or chat but they keep you on your toes with all sorts of law violations, three behind square, short runs, two bounce no balls and very inconsistent run ups so someone who was nowhere near no balling one minute can be right on the line the next ball. Not to mention Norfolk somehow managed 14 bowling changes in only 35 overs ! One poor girl bowled six overs in four spells. I thought I could keep track as the girls were mostly wearing personalized kit, then I discovered one girl had borrowed kit off another.

Speaking of two bounce no balls, i got someone out last year as a ball I bowled landed about 2/3 of the way down the wicket, and just did not bounce and rolled into the stumps, and much to everyone's amusement, the umpires didn't calla no ball, so off the batter went.

My mediocre season has hit rock bottom, the ECB is openly mocking me -

CricketRuns.jpg

They *know* how many runs I scored, they said it later in the email (Yes, it's a nice round number, very round). I just seem to have had no luck this season so far I have - been bowled having a swipe at a two bounce ball that wasn't called no ball, top edges a hook back to the bowler when there was virtually no one out on the leg side so practically any other kind of mishit would have been safe, mishit a rank long hop to point, lbw pulling a ball that kept horribly low.

I don't like cricket, i love it!

Most ridiclous innings i've ever witnessed. Ben Stokes deserves SPOTY and a Knighthood for that performance alone, let along the World Cup final!
