Hi all

 

In a bit of a predicament with a new car I'm purchasing. Owner (who I know well) has moved to Spain and needs rid of his car back here in UK, which im interested in but it is without MOT and the silly sausage has misplaced the V5 so cant tax it (not that you can anyway without MOT).

 

Does anyone know anyone near Spalding, PE11 that could pick the car up for me and bring it to Hull either on trailer, flatbed or trade plates? car is roadworthy, MOT has only lapsed due to owner being in Spain. I am in posession of said cars keys.

book the car in for an MOT near where you live. the only time you are permitted to drive a car without a tax or MOT is if you are driving to and from an MOT test centre, there is no restriction on where that test centre can be. a friend drove a van from derby to blackpool in similar circumstances.

Do you know... ive just got the insurance sorted (cheaper than I thought) so I may just do this to be honest.

Although it is legit to do that, I wouldn't worry if you see a police car when doing it.

 

I once renewed my car insurance and there was a typo in the reg number. So as far as the police computer was concerned I wasn't insured. I wasn't stopped once and I drove 15,000 miles. I only found out when I came to tax it!

This, went to the cop shop and showed them the error and they were fine about it.

I would be hesitant to do this if it is a fairly long distance drive. Driving a car down the road, or to the next town to get an MOT will be fine, I imagine the police would look down on someone driving cross country with the excuse of I'm driving it to get an MOT.

 

Why not book it in somewhere local to its current location, a JustMOT or Halfords test center, and then when it passes you can drive it home?

Ha, ha - funniest thing I've read for a while.

 

There are plenty of good reasons for using your local, known and long established MOT centre instead of a place like these who only seem to exist to generate money from the "necessary" repairs.

Not sure what is funny? Never had a problem using either of those, though only used Halfords once. JustMOT don't do parts, they just do MOTs, hence the name. Yes I would prefer to use my trusted garage but beggars can't be choosers.

 

Your own link says keep the distance short or you could still be had up by the police and if you stop anywhere it could be considered you using the car rather than going to the MOT center.

 

Roll the dice and take your chance, you may be lucky and miss all cameras and police. Or you may have your car impounded and end up with a hefty fine.

What I will say is by not having a valid MOT or tax you may depending on the terms of your insurance be invalidating this too. Food for thought.

Sorted drove her back, Insurnace where fine. Doesnt have to have a valid MOT for insurance.
