Going rate for WAN link?

I would like to know what the approximate going rate for a 1GB WAN link would be? I am thinking point to point link between two secondary schools.

 

Possibly an open ended question, depending upon their distance from an exchange etc. I am aware they could be install costs initially.

 

Any one any ideas before I start contacting the likes of VMB to quote me?

Per year, you would be looking at 1.5k for 100Mbit/s and 3.5k for 1000Mbit/s. Give or take depending on area, distance etc.

 

It will be around £800 installation.

We do quite a few of these with virgin, bt and city

 

Prices change with bt dependent on if the line has both points terminated on the same exchange or not.

 

Virgins wholesale prices are normally about 10% less when both ends are on net.

 

Virgin also do a cool point to multipoint product we've used when there's a few local sites to connect back to a single location

 

1gbit prices should be around a couple of grand install and three and a bit grand rental if on the same exchange.

FYI Schools Broadband quoted us on point to points a while back and came out the most expensive, so its worth doing your homework.

Depending on the link and the topology is a Wireless PtP link a possibility? Look at the Ubiquiti AirFiber.. 1.5gbps aggregate Full Duplex. One off cost for supply and install and then completely in your control.

I have used the kit you mentioned to connect two buildings together at my previous school and it’s great kit!

Doesnt mean its a non starter depending on topolgy - have done 30KM links using this kit without issue.

 

If you want me to look and see if this is possible then PM me the 2 schools and ill do some calcualtions.

For us we found SB were the same price as everyone else who quoted so as they were our ISP at the time we went with them for our EAD link.

 

For the actucal amount it will cost you depends on the distance the cable needs to go.

 

The distance and how many roads the link would cross has also to be taken in to consideration for the installation time as the provider (for example BT) has to get permission from your local council pretty much every step of the way and that can be the biggest hold up to any ETA's you're given for installation times.

It really depends which infrastructure provider you or your ISP use (as a few others have said). For the vast majority of the UK, point to points are done over Openreach infrastructure as they have the largest install base, and even other providers such as VMB do you OR tails quite often.

 

With that in mind, if you are getting a quote from a supplier (including Exa) then you shouldn't find that much difference on costs, as all providers who take tails from OR buy them at the same rate card. So there shouldn't be more than £500 between the cheapest quote and the most expensive (unless people are adding big margins on). Install should be around a couple of thousand (for OR) and anywhere from £3K upwards for the tail. Happy to give you a quote if you want, just PM me.

We have a wireless link between two buildings that cost us around £600 and it goes up to 8Km. We put it up ourselves and it's been OK. Admitedly our buildings are less than 1/2 a mile apart but it can be used for a lot more. It's around 150Mbps so not the speed you're after but my point is there must be some similar links that are faster and go that sort of distance.

 

The frequency it uses (and we checked this with OfCom) doesnt require us to get a wireless license so no messing about with that.

 

It's a Deliberant unit but they have now been taken over by LigoWave so our model isnt on their site any more, but this is the closest to what we have:

This one goes up to 12Km which is about 7.45miles

 

There as signal bar indicator (like you have on your mobile) and we just got on the roofs where we installed them and just roughly pointed them at each other (we have a couple of trees in the way but they are designed to deal with that using, well magic) and you wiggle one until you get the strongest signal and then you wiggle the other one and then you get a good signal linking the two buildings together.

Beware with PTP wifi with AirFiber. Whilst 1.5Gbps is possible, it uses a a large amount of airspace which means you have to use DFS frequencies. These can and will drop out if they get radar hits etc... If you want full reliablity, you have to drop the bandwidth right down to fit into the non-DFS frequency range. (This is from experience, as we run 2 pairs of them. One site really struggled with it, as it was regularly overflown by military aircraft! We get 86Mbps at that site, and 800Mbps at our other).

Out of interest once you’ve got the links up, how are you making sure traffic is routed through the core switch ? I ask as we have mpls for our schools but only for one subnet 10.134.x.x/22(it’s a provider issue that we can route only this net ). I’d like to route our 172. Subnets between sites but I wouldn’t want the wireless link to route the 10.134./22 network. I guess it’s a cli on the core switch for routing 172.16.x.x 0.0.0.0 via wlan ??
