Anyone have any idea that the machines shipped after with Vista, could come with XP downgrade option still? Thing is, Becta still do not recommend using Vista & having played with it myself, ive no intention of letting the god forsaken piece of crap on my network!

I don't think Vista's having quite the impact Microsoft would like, so they must listen to their partners. Microsoft's biggest problem is Windows XP.

tech_guy Posted March 31, 2008 Posted March 31, 2008 And what about being able to buy OEM CDs? Will they still be available until stocks run out and are the retailers going to start charging silly money? I build PCs as a sideline and the majority of people I build for are still asking for XP.

Apart from me obviously regards Simon Erm - I wouldn't. I'd only downgrade if we'd bought the rights to do so. Surely as IT professionals we have to operate our schools within the law?
Quackers Posted March 31, 2008 Posted March 31, 2008 Buy a select Windows Upgrade licence if it comes with Vista Basic etc. Thats what we do. They are cheap enough. Every machine that comes in, even if its XP gets formated and Windows re-installed. Which i asume everyone on here does too. The crap OEM's insist on putting on is mad. Plus we image for deployments.

I thought (but not with much certainty) that the downgrade option would disappear at the same time as retail/OEM sales. If you can still use it, then great; if not, I'm buying me some more XP licences now to cover any growth until we go Vista :-)

OverWorked Posted April 1, 2008 Posted April 1, 2008 All this depends on the availability of XP drivers for your new shiny computer. A few months ago, two teachers came to me with laptops they'd bought themselves (there was a long thread about it at the time). I tried to downgrade to XP but couldn't because there were no drivers available. They've had to wait until I'm ready to support Vista. Don't assume that because you've got the license it's technically possible! In the next 6-12 months it'll be increasingly difficult to find XP compatible new computers especially laptops.

Technically you'll be right but I think the increase will be small. As soon as a supplier drops driver support - that supplier will find their business going downhill fast - and I think suppliers are very pragmatic people - once they see one firm struggling for sales- they'll not be keen to follow them. As I told a tale in another thread - my main supplier was told by Fujitsu that they would not be selling/supporting XP anymore - after being thanked and shown the door there was a remarkable turnaround in Fujitsu's attitude and we now have "Twinload" - the laptops come with Vista pre-installed but 30 mins with the DVD supplied and your back with XP I now send any people (friends/teachers/relatives/friends of relative teachers) asking me where to get a machine from and I say get a Fujistsu or go online with Dell but order from the Business section where you can have whatever OS you want. If we (that is network/system managers) just say no - we will win - because at the end of the day - firms will not generally try to self-destruct themselves - even MS will do something to help us eventually. regards Simon PS must check my medication Edited April 2, 2008 by SimpleSi
