Thank you. We've just had a look at Terraforming Mars. It shows as 1 - 5 players. Is it best with people? and/or can it be played well solo?

It plays well with both.

 

Carcassonne, Pandemic and Ticket to ride are also good but they are older games so he would probably have those. Which is why I suggested Terraforming Mars.
