Any predictions for what might come up relevant to schools?

 

Amendment to Article 8(1) is a code of practice for children using Information Society Services based on consent Article 6(1)(a). How much schools' online activities policy is based on consent?

 

There was also an introductory amendment that's only relevant for children and pupils up to age 19 in education (Amendment 117) at end of p25 and top of p26. https://publications.parliament.uk/pa/bills/lbill/2017-2019/0074/18074-I.pdf If interested, take a look and I would be interested in your opinions in shaping something to be useful for schools.

As @GrumbleDook highlighted, a lot of time on 'Age appropriate' internet services and many thank to Baroness Kidron for her work. One thing I did see but have not yet tracked is the amendment 87A with the following proposal "“Data protection officer: schools - Where a school maintained by a local authority is unable to designate a data protection officer, the relevant local authority must designate a data protection officer for that school or any group of schools maintained by that local authority.”

That’s going to be really interesting as councils don’t have them themselves or they bring head hunted to private business. Our council no way could provide anyone let alone for school who do t have someone suitable

I'll let someone with a clearer understanding of the legislative process than me explain!

Possibly the dullest half hour I’ve ever spent….

 

From the report on proceedings in the House of Lords, Lord Ashton of Hyde (No, never heard of him either) said….

 

 

In this case, to help them, the Department for Education is going to provide guidance—and I am assured that it will be out very soon. So they have particular responsibilities. The kind of personal data that they handle on a regular basis is very important; I believe that the noble Lord, Lord Clement-Jones, mentioned an example of some of the personal data that they hold in relation to free school meals, which has to be protected and looked after carefully. One benefit for the school system, as far as other organisations are concerned, is that they will have central guidance from the Department for Education—and I repeat that that is due to come out very soon.

 

 

So there it is…. guidance will come “very soon”.

I quite enjoyed the discussion on press freedom vs press abuse of other people's freedoms.

Yes, there is guidance and we have started to see some come out ... and the team at DfE is working on it.

Tony what's missing is who is that film for? the audiece is totally unclear and without accompanying guidance to action, unlikely to make much helpful difference. As I told Ian, I'm looking forward to seeing guidance on privacy notices and SAR, and being told what the Department plans to do about their own policy on those.
