Projector for School Hall

One of my primary schools has asked for a new hall projector. I can't get at the current projector without scaffolding. The hall has windows round all walls near the ceiling - with blinds but they're not brilliant.

 

How many lumens should I be aiming for?

as many as you can afford. minimum 6k I'd say.

we went with a laser projector as our school hall is also very high, they run almost silent, turn on quickly and have a much longer service life ( no bulb)

We've found in a reasonably bright hall that a 3000 lumens is more than enough, however when time goes by that will be a different story. We're looking at replacing ours which is a crap expensive Casio LED projector; biggest con I've seen in a long time Depends entirely on circumstances and throw of course; our throw is only a few meters. If you're going from back of the hall to the front, then you'll need a hell of a lot more!

Last one I put in our hall was an Optoma DH1011. This is a bright, Full HD, quick and above all good value unit. Been very happy with it since installing. Our hall is pretty bight and it can get drowned out still (on sunny days), but we have curtains and can turn off the front row of lights.

5000 lumens we have just had installed. It’s great!

We put a 4000 lumens Sony in our hall (projector is at the back, mounted in the projection room, so it has a ~30m throw). Cost a fortune as we had to get the extra long throw lens and even with that the smallest the image goes is the entire of the stage backdrop.

It's bright enough with the lights off, you can still see it okay with them on but it's not as clear. It probably could do with being 6000 lumens although it is also an old projector (we did this in 2008, and it's had one new lamp since)

We had one of these installed recently at 10-15m throw distance. Great picture and hopefully maintenance free for a while.

It really does depend on size of image required and distance from the screen or wall the projector will be sited. If you know these measurements I can recommend a projector.

 

Rule of thumb is 1000 ANSI per metre if there is natural ambient light.
