Radius Server for EduRoam

For those of you that use EduRoam what Radius servers are you using on site.

 

We need to update our aging IAS (yes I know, it's very been a busy couple of years). Apparently NPS on Server 2012r2 isn't great for EduRoam so what are the alternatives like.

 

Once it is place it won't need much management but would prefer a Windows version for the interface familiarity and lack of steep learning curve that will come with the likes of FreeRadius/

We use one that is Linux based one from memory - we actually have it built and maintained for us the the University of London Computing Centre - ping me a message if you want their details

 

Have you also thought about also broadcasting govroam?

Is Eduroam just limited to HE/FE or do other schools participate out of interest?

We use NPS and never had any issues with internal or external users.

+1 for NPS on 2012 r2, but have just moved it to 2016

 

I think if you read the JIsC Eduroam Lists there sort of pushing you to freeradius and there is a bit of snobbery towards NPS but for us it works great.

Our preference would prob be FreeRadius, we are not prepared to role out 2016 until the first update at least. I could muddle thru with Linux, we have the resources in house in a different team.

They are pushing FreeRadius, I guess this is because of licensing but maybe also because it's Microsoft OS and patch/update issues..... Personally I'm a fan of Non-GUI servers because they stop some idiot using the server to browse the internet and download crud :-) .

To be honest I couldn’t tell you the last time I went near our NPS box apart from August when we moved it to 2016. It’s setup and runs a dream. Prior to that it ran on 2012 R2 for a good two years I reckon.

 

We average about 730ish concurrent connections on Eduroam per day On a single nps box sitting in our Hyper-V cluster.

 

I get what your saying about patching/licensing but.... not that many places have the luxury of a Linux person (I have an old Red Hat Enterprise certification) and even I prefer the windows route. It also means my team can also jump in and learn/support and in the event of an issue can quickly figure stuff out rather than fumbling thru Linux if their not familiar with it.

 

Starting to use Project Honolulu a lot especially for our Semi Annual Channel 2016 1709 servers.

 

Suppose it’s down to personal choice like most things isn’t it sir.
