Permission to install SIMS please

A quick SIMS (and PARS) one for anyone who may be able to help...

 

What permissions are required to allow a teacher to upgrade SIMS and/or PARS on their workstation? Its been running on the admin network for years, supported by an org the Lancs folk all know and love the users there are all local admins on their machines. I don't want to do that on my network. Any help appreciated as always.

Leave all users as restricted users!

 

Give users change permissions on the folder

c:\program files\sims - and all its subdirectories

 

Problem sorted.

Most of mine are local admins as setup by the Westfield centre but I have been trying just giving them full permisson on the SIMs folder for the last few I have done (as suggested by someone else) and this seems to be working.

 

Thats just for SIMs though cant comment on PARS.

PARS also needs full write access to program files\pars and for some updates it requires you to be logged in as admin. As far as i can tell it uses VB and some office components, you must be logged in as admin to update these. This wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for the fact they release an update about every 2 hours and when it runs staff never wait for it to finish. They see a screen that doesn't usually appear and immediatly shutdown down their laptop and bring it to us complaining that its broken (It is now that you shudown half way through the update yes!)

Forgot to mention, recently capita included an installation of pia for office 2003 which need more permission. If a teacher tried to install it, it crashes and carries on. It will get into sims but pia is not installed. Basically who know what further permissions are required.

 

My resolution to this is to stop teachers from using simsload and go straight to pulsar, which is quicker anyway. To get the upgrade, im trying to create a script that will do a mass update automatically without user interaction ie the computer will run the update not the user.

If you just modify the C:\Program Files\Sims folder you are likey to run into problems as a Sims Update can also do stuff in the Windows Folder aswell.

 

Easiest thing to do to make sure you have the correct permissions on the correct files or folders is create a group on the server with all your Sims users a member of, i.e SIMS,

 

Then on the workstations, go to the SIMS Setup Directory from a command prompt...

 

e.g.

S:\Sims\Setups

 

then type in the following... simsperm.bat DOMAINNAME\GROUPNAME i.e DOMAIN\SIMS

 

S:\Sims\Setups>simsperm.bat DOMAIN\SIMS

 

That will then run a little script that will set the correct permissions for everybody who is a member of that group.

 

YOU MUST be an admin tho in order to run that script.

We use Group policy to setup the file permissions for SIMS.net

 

Computer configuration - Windows Settigs - Security Setting - File System

 

Assign Full Control to:

 

%Program Files%\SIMS

%System Root%\SIMS.INI

 

 

Computer configuration - Windows Settigs - Security Setting - Registry

 

Assign Full Control to:

 

Machine\Software\Classes

Machine\Software\Classes\CLSID

Machine\Software\Classes\Interface

Machine\Software\Classes\Typelib

 

No need to use the the simsperm.bat file which has to be run on every machine. Manage everything via GPMC

Cheers for that but I did end up using the simsperm.bat in a computer script which I can control via Group Policy.
