OK,

I pop in my Win XP SP1 cd into my vista laptop. Reboot into the cd, it starts checking the machine as it usually would do. Then I get blue screen of death.

Anyideas??

Happens with all Vista machines I try to downgrade

Interesting it happens on all laptops you're trying to make good :)

I would highly recommend you create an XP SP2 disc however, otherwise you'll have to install SP2 afterwards. It's always better to create a new disc.

Do you have an error code or message that appears when the laptops blue screen?

agreed on the bsod error message ( if you can reply with that ) if it does not give you a chance to read it, before windows loads if you keep pressing F8 and there should be an option to disable automatic restart when it encounters an error, if you use the arrow keys to highlight it and press enter / return to select it, that should give you a c hance to read and write down the bsod error.

or even better... a sp3 disc!!

Well yes I would say SP3, but it still hasn't gone final (yet). I wouldn't recommend deploying SP3 until it's tried and tested. SP3 is essentially SP2 + hotfixes, plus a few other bits.

Found this from your BSOD on google :

[RESOLVED] bsod when installing xp [Archive] - Virtual Dr Forums-Computer Tech Support

According to that you need at least an sp2 disc for PCI Express graphics cards.

You''l need Windows XP SP2 to support a PCI-Express graphics card.

DFI's homepage says:

If you are using only PCI-Express graphics card, the only choice is to boot from the complete edition of Windows XP SP2.

If you intend to install with Windows XP or Windows XP SP1 and then use the upgrade kit of SP2, please disable PCI-Express in BIOS before starting the installation.

Under this circumstance, only PCI graphics card can help you monitoring the installation process at this stage. Then, upgrade the version to SP2. After upgrading is successfully completed, you can enable PCI-Express and start using PCI-Express graphics card.

PCI.SYS Windows XP pro will not install please help - TechSpot OpenBoards
