No tape backup support without 3rd-party software

Indeed it does, - my viewpoint on this one is from the perspective of some of our primary schools, who are running SIMS on a server that cost around £1200, with an OS that cost them £50 (or thereabouts). To suddenly have an extra £375 stuck on for Backup Exec (with possibly another £300 or so for the SQL agent) makes it all rather more expensive.

I'd tell them not to bother with the SQL agent. scheduled batch files to stop and restart the sql service has proved very reliable in my LEA.

this is bad for us as our LEA have said that we can only back up the SIMS data to a tape drive, we are not allowed to use a CD, or portable hard drive.

 

anyone know if there is any freebie software that allows you to backup to to tape??

@button_ripple - You could try writing to your authority and pointing out that Windows Server 2008 (without third party software) no longer supports backup to tape.

 

There's no immediate rush to upgrade to 2008 server for at least another year, by which time your authority should of updated their backup policies for schools.

People still use tapes We moved towards hard disk backups about 3 years ago!

We have been using NovaBackup on XP for some years, since version 7.3

 

Did my first SIMS data migration to Server 2008 the other day and the suppliers found out the hard way that tapes are not supported.

 

Down-loaded and installed the server version of NovaBackup 10 to get the school out of a pickle.

 

Works fine, still not sure of cost (around £100 ish) and when all concerned are smiling at the end of the day, that's called "A result".

just curious, whay type of data are you backing up? is it on a backend DB? or are you just backing up files?

The school are backing up the entire server to tape. Or at least they were. Not fully supported by us.

 

The built-in SQL 2005 agent takes care of SIMS .net
