1. How do you change the QOS limit?

2. How much data do you have backed up using this method? Is it server image files or just directories?

The QOS is on our firewall. It will depend on what product you use.

 

Just files for key data like SIMS at the moment. I am going to play with images at some point.

Have you looked at "SQL backup and FTP"? Backs up the database and the docstore (as a zip), encrypts the files and copies them up to a cloud service of your choice. Ours is a Google drive account setup specifically for this very thing but you can use Amazon S3 or Azure if you want to pay loads. The product costs about £180 in perpetuity. Like Ronseal, does what it says on the tin. Not a full VM backup but we use QNAP and cloud sync (a QNAP App) to copy the SIMS Veeam job up there (encrypted of course). Much in the way of belts and braces

We already have scripts to backup SIMS DB and Doc storage provided by the SIMS support people. I use use Rclone with that and it costs nothing.

I've just been asked to look at Online Backup Solutions for our data as an extra point of redundancy.

 

I was wondering what companies fellow Edugeekers use in their schools and recommend any caveats I should be aware of?

 

Ok, so reading through this thread and corrections, the summary so far is that others use:

 

Azure Backup

Backup to another School or Site

Gigasoft

Google Drive

 

Services that no one has used, but are ideas none the less are:

 

Amazon Glacier

OneDrive (but there maybe a file size limit?)

You could look at Crashplan: https://www.crashplan.com/

 

Unlimited storage, unlimited retention, $10 per machine per month. Windows Server OS is listed as supported, so presumably if you get all the data onto one server, you'd only need to pay for one machine.

More advanced than Crashplan, designed for virtualized environments, variety of prices, but all less than you're currently playing.

What level of support do you want/expect? How much do you want to pay?

Operating on a really thin shoestring, place a NAS or similar somewhere you can reach it, and manage yourself.....

I have a ‘safe’ at home which holds a NAS which I feed securely from school.

Biggest problem with all options is transfer rates and how frequently you need to update? Transfer with encryption also slows things.

I have a feed ‘bucket’ at school near my edge, which I feed at local network speeds, then it dribbles out to offsite all day or night long.... EG the Sims DMS takes about 4-5 hours, but it gets there. Similarly SIMS BAK files etc.....

My next test will be to see what happens to large image files, such as server images......

We do use a professional service for a few hundred a year for key data daily, but this is akin to carrying tapes offsite as a “just in case” copy

...we use D2D2T ...so we have the option of taking tape off site...but actually we keep tapes in a remote and separate building...

 

Don’t think I would be looking at more expense by paying for cloud space....rather buy a few 10TB disks and use windows server backup...and usb 3 connector ...which I think is a much overlooked piece of software....

 

I’ve always thought that it would be particularly tedious if you had to recover a whole server via an internet connection...much quicker if you actually have a disk with backup on....and you wouldn’t have to worry about using your bandwidth...
