I was reading you can also connect the fire relay to an input on the net2 and configure it in the software as a fire alarm trigger. Has anyone done it this way?

 

We've done this in one of our buildings, although we got the fire alarm guys to wire from a relay directly on the alarm panel to the paxton controller for the nearest door. As said you need the Pro version of the software for this, but you get a list of all doors (and door groups) and just tick which you want to open when the alarm is triggered.

I gotta feel sorry for one of our year 11 kids.

 

Back in year 7/8 he was a nightmare for my team; always fiddling with IT, very good "hacker", etc. Not aware of any problems recently; I think he's turned a corner and using his considerable skills for good.

 

However he's been caught this lunchtime operating the school gate which only disabled students and staff have access to; students should use the single-person turnstiles adjacent. He let out probably 200 students, thus unaccounted for in fire alarm or safeguarding situations.

 

Checking the Paxton log, he was using an NQT Trainee staff card, and with his reputation preceding him, he was/is in big trouble.

 

Turns out, both his mifare card and the trainee's mifare card give the same Paxton ID when converted - unlucky for him!

 

I'm now checking all our other cards to make sure no more conversion duplicates.

I'd prefer a physical fire relay that is connected to the fire system on each controller than rely on the Paxton software to be honest, unless of course it's programmed into each controller.

 

I created a spreadsheet that reads a card using a cheap mifare reader which then converts to Paxton format, I put the users name after each one before adding to net2

Yep, understood,

 

We're tendering a new site-wide fire alarm in 3-4 months, which will be the ideal time to include fire relays by each door.

 

Therefore until then we're using Paxton to achieve it.

Was gonna go for the pro version anyway for timesheets so thats okay, had a look today and all our current mag lock doors have a fire relay next to each pannel, so hopefully can use them as I wouldn't want to rely on the network/software to open the doors in an emergency. They are the same relay on every door as shown below. I'll get the alarm company in to connct them up though I think.

No, if you're using fire relays then they go in-line with the maglock like the pic earlier in this thread. Fire alarm rings, the power dies to the maglocked regardless of Paxton or Net2.

 

If using a single input from the Fire Alarm, yes it goes where you've indicated the relay.

Perhaps also worth mentioning, I missed it earlier, when I said we use paxton instead of individual fire alarm relays to open the doors - all these doors have push button exit so in the event that the network is down you can still push the exit button, and we also have green "break glass" units which cut the power to the mag lock directly as a fail safe anyway. Wouldn't dream of not having a proper fire relay on a door where you need a code/fob to exit with no break glass or any fail safe.

Looking at the diagram for the XP95, you just need the NC and COM from it, probably relay 1 should do the trick. When the site team do a test you will soon know if it works :)

@speakercon I am interested in doing a DIY paxton install as well - Mind if i ask how much all the bits you need costed? It would also be good to know how long install takes. We where quoted about £1000 per door by a professional local installer!

It worked out at just about £280 for one door (controller & reader). The USB reader & 10 cards to test with was another £80. We already have a different system installed at the moment so the actual mag locks and release buttons are already in place so it should just be a matter of removing the existing control panel & reader and connecting up the Paxton stuff.

 

I'll report back with feedback on the installation after we've done it (which is hopefully this week!).

That's not a bad price for new components and installation though, list price the controller is around £360, fob readers £150 so it adds up very quickly. It's amazing how much you save by getting 2nd hand parts (most of the controllers I've had have even had 4 years of the warranty left on them, although the warning labels everywhere state it's void if you don't get one of their accredited trade installers to fit it)

Okay, bit of an update! Got the door controller installed and working! Wiring was very straight forward; the hardest part is drilling and running cables to make it all look neat. Not much more to say really, it just works.

 

I've put my wiring diagram below if anyone is interested, I've added a local siren connected to the NO terminal on the emergency switch so if it is pressed the alarm goes off. This is so in the case it is pressed maliciously it both to draws attention to the fact it's been pressed and hopefully gives who ever pressed it a fright so they won’t do it again.
