Recommendations to replace my Cisco 1841

We are about to increase our Internet connection to 300/1000

As such my Cisco 1841 wont cope as it is only 100Mbs

 

A meraki MX appliance would be great but i simply can't justify the price even for one of the wee MX84 versions.

 

It has been suggested i look at a Draytek 2960 but i just feel i need / would like something that has the power of a Cisco.

 

Any thoughts gratefully appreciated!

Draytek isn't really good for that kind of deployment, it is just small business.

 

What features do you need? For our internet router we use a Cisco 3650 L3 switch and it does basic routing, the advance stuff is done by the firewall. We set the IP addresses on the actual ports using the No Switchport command. If you want basic routing they will out perform a router because of the hardware ASIC on each port, plus you get more ports than a router. If you need advance features that solution might not be suitable.

Thanks - the 3650 is around £3K? I would be better looking at a MX250 for that money, yes?

 

Looking to spend around £1500 and need to create a VPN, NAT/Firewall rules and maybe block a few websites at top end.

We use a Smoothwall for general filtering and so far it is great.

Definitely cost us less than £2k. Might have been £1,800 ish.

 

You're better off looking for a proper firewall then. You can pickup a Sonicwall NSA 3600 for around your price bracket. (not purchased one in 2 years though)

Wouldn't touch the sonic wall - just don't like it at all!

Would something from the likes of Ubiquiti be suitable? Even the cheapest router in their EdgeRouter lineup can handle speeds over 900Mbps.

Mikrotek is an option I been looking at it also what Schools Broadband use.

The Mikrotiks are excellent routers and very powerful for the cost. However they are quite complicated to configure and if you don't know what you're doing you'll get frustrated with them quite quickly. Persevere though and you can get a lot out of them.

Fair enough, I guess nobody got fired for buying Cisco. Just thought a £300 router and £400 for the Ubiquiti Broadband Routing & Switching Specialist Training might be better value.

 

We've got a couple of Cisco routers sat gathering dust as apparently neither of them are powerful enough for a gigabit connection. Is there an easy way to find out what speed connections they can support?

we'd be happy to quote for you - we often deploy our Sophos platform with cut down licence that provides combined router and firewall functionality. The web filtering and other features can be added later if needed.
