Meraki Lost mode killed iPad

We have Lost Mode enabled on an iPad that had gone missing - when it turned up it went into lost mode. I disabled lost mode through the console but it just says Pending and the ipad is now useless

 

So that's a dead ipad - warning to anyone using meraki, never let any device go into lost mode unless you 100% sure its gone for good!

Hmm I'll have to see if I can find those adapters - never thought that would work to be honest as ipads are 100% wifi, which makes me wonder how meraki thought lost mode would actually work in reality!

Nope, once locked like this you can't even use AC2 to re-prepare it, or erase it and start again.

This, we had Meraki in the past and whenever there was an issue, we just restored it

That's what I've tried, I'm wondering if there's a fault and the Lost Mode is just something else to deal with! This ipad may be destined for the bin....

Use Apple Configurator 2 and click restore on the iPad. This should clear the device no matter what.

Yeah tried this but seems to loop back, restarting to the lock screen message. I'm going to try the USB lan trick when I've got all the right cables!

We used lost mode for a missing iPad, it turned up 6 months later when a teacher discovered it in her desk and quietly slipped it back into the charging station, I found it with the lost notice on the screen, followed the instructions on Meraki and disabled the lost mode & it updated fine. Took no more than a few mins to sort. I know this doesn't help much but it does work. I'm sure it's recoverable, it's Meraki thats a law unto itself!

I know it's not quite your issue as it's Lightspeed MDM, but this is from their help pages:

WARNING: Due to an issue with Apple, it has been found that when putting a device that has a passcode configured into Lost Mode, any subsequent reboot will cause the device to lose connectivity. Once in this state, there is no way to unlock the device and the only known way to recover the device is to perform a restore. Nevertheless, Lost Mode is still the preferred method for locating lost or stolen iOS devices.

 

However, it still seems to suggest that you should be able to perform a restore on a lost/locked iPad (not sure why you can't).

we had a passcode on ours, we may have restored ours, it's far simpler than trying to get Meraki to work sometimes.

Finally, after a gazillion attempts (well, probably) I managed to get this into recovery mode and restored it!

 

Thanks for the all input - Lost Mode is definitely only for when you're damn sure its gone!

Hmm, how does that work though? My issues was that lost mode effectively switches off the wifi and therefore it can't see that Lost most has been disabled, or are you re-enabling it with the usb adaptor setup?

Same here - use it all the time when a student has misplaced their iPad.

 

We do have the setup using USB-Lightning and USB-Ethernet for occasions where one does drop off - a rebooted iPad won't connect to WiFi until the passcode is put in - I wish Apple would change this so it would connect to known trusted wifi after a reboot!

 

An iPad stuck in lost mode can be reset using DFU as normal however some iPads do seem to play silly beggars with actually getting them to reset and wipe but we've not had one yet that hasn't been able to be done.

This. Putting the iPad in to lost mode has never switched off the WiFi for me. Kinda would defeat the purpose of lost mode is it did!
