CHM-ITServices Posted September 8, 2017 Posted September 8, 2017 Hi guys, I'm trying to find a school that has Impero implemented correctly and by that, i mean, not just as a 'techie tool' but the full safeguarding shebang! Is there anyone out there who has the procedures in place to deal with all the captures, false-positives and general safeguarding issues that arise from the use of the software? If there is, i'm ultimately looking to come and see it in operation but i'm also up for some discussion. Thanks in advance
RichCowell Posted September 8, 2017 Posted September 8, 2017 We've used it for years for the safeguarding (as well as a techie tool)... From what I've learned, everywhere has slightly different ways of dealing with and processing the information, but I'd be more than happy to help if I can... We've been a reference site for them for years...
Andycat Posted September 8, 2017 Posted September 8, 2017 I'd like to know too, we use it as a "techie tool" and class management, but obviously would like to explore safeguarding a bit more... 1
Andy2789 Posted September 8, 2017 Posted September 8, 2017 We use it for the full Safeguarding package, we combine the captures with information from our Smoothwall report to get an overall picture on devices. We have finally got the safeguarding function working on our Mac's now as well. More than happy to give any pointers if needed. We have tweaked the default capture list to deal with the number of false positives, which so far is working really well for reducing my workload in trawling every week the captures and discussing these with students / parents. 1
RichCowell Posted September 8, 2017 Posted September 8, 2017 @Jam_lane and @Andycat - neither of you are too far from me, you're welcome to pop in and have a look, though there's not a great deal to see - happy to talk more on the phone?
Mic_Impero Posted September 8, 2017 Posted September 8, 2017 Hi all, Thanks for being helpful as usual @RichCowell - there's absolutely no substitute for speaking to other schools but if we can be useful please don't hesitate to get in touch with me. We've seen a lot of implementations and can advise on best practice and more importantly how to make it fit and work in your setting with your policies. Also happy to help with any working groups you'd like to set up, just drop me a PM and i'll send you back my details. Mic @ Impero 1

Tried to ring you this morning but the line was constantly engaged for about an hour! @Mic_Impero gave me your contact before summer (hi @Mic_Impero, it's Jamie!). Just for info, i understand how the safeguarding element works but its my understanding that IT folk(like myself) should not be the one's dealing with the captures. I would like to see a system were pastoral staff are involved and the process' they use. Does that still apply to you @RichCowell? Thanks for the replies so far

Th issue i have, (and we are in the exact same boat as you) if OFSTED were to come in, would you get away with having a product that can prevent safeguarding issues but that it isn't used to because it's too much work. Currently we capture hundreds of screenshots a day but nobody looks at them...

Currently we capture hundreds of screenshots a day but nobody looks at them... Any good system is going to get false positives, I'd be dubious about any that didn't, or only had a minimal amount - certainly out of the box... Regardless of whether you've got something installed but not used, or nothing for safeguarding at all, Ofsted wouldn't let you get away with it now with KCSIE and Prevent, but I'd imagine less so if they're just not being looked at... but there are ways to make it easier - tweaking the regular false positives, and liaising with the company/developers... and spreading the load / responsibility of reviewing the data etc... I'll talk more when I call you back 1

Thanks for the replies so far That's one of the things I like to debate, I'm definitely of the opinion that it absolutely should not just be left up to the Network Manager / Technicians to monitor the violations and alerts - unless that person has had the full safeguarding training, and is kept up to date with all the goings-on about current concerns, at-risk/vulnerable children etc. - there's too much chance of things being missed or overlooked. That is how we did it here initially, but changed several years ago and it works SO much better now. Out pastoral team consists of 6 main people - the heads of year and a member of SLT that sits above them, the heads of year receive all the alerts etc. for their year group and act accordingly, ignoring false positives and letting me know if there are any regular ones so I can see if anything can be changed. The DSL have access to the full logs, so they can go in and see all the alerts for all the school. Edited September 8, 2017 by RichCowell 1
steveg Posted September 8, 2017 Posted September 8, 2017 We are a primary school, but use the safeguarding side of things very heavily. We are fortunate that 99% of the things we have dealt with on it have been behaviour issues rather than safeguarding. We have it set so all violations are emailed (with a screenshot) to myself (Network Manager, amongst other roles) Head, and 2 deputy heads. We can normally tell if it is genuine or not from the screenshot, but if not it is set to record a 1 minute video too. Once we are sure that it is genuine, myself and either the Head or a deputy will go to speak to the child. We always aim to get there asap, normally within 5 minutes of the incident occurring. This makes a huge difference to the impact, and also allows for the many times that it was a group of children involved on one persons user account. Sanctions are then given in line with the schools behaviour policy, or the issue dealt with in-line with our e-safety policy if it is a safeguarding issue. We keep a file of all incidents that happen on the computer, keeping a copy of the screenshot, and an explanation of what happened, who dealt with it and the outcome. 3 Times per year I compile details of all the violations (nothing user specific) and share this with Governors, as part of my Network managers report. We had Ofsted a year ago, and they were very happy with our procedures. Steve 3
