Raid Configuration Help Request

Hi All,

 

Could do with a bit of a help on what to go for, I have just taken delivery of a new Dell PowerEdge T330 Server with the following disk configuration:

 

2 x 300GB 10k SAS Drives

 

4 x 2TB 7.5K SAS Drives

 

Can anyone recommend how I should set it up?

 

Going to install Windows Server 2016 along with SCCM we currently use about 1.5TB on our current server for all our data.

RAID 1 (2 x 300GB for OS) and RAID 5 (4 x 2TB for Data).

 

Alternatively 3 x RAID 1's, but the above is generally recommended.

For me, RAID 1 for the 2 300GB drives and RAID 10 for the 2TB drives, though it will cost you half of the total storage.

Are you running Hyper-V? If so I would try and get all your vm os drives on your 10k disks for better performance.

 

I wouldn't go RAID5 personally on 7.2k disks as the performance won't be great, RAID10 all the way for those.

As above suggestions really. Raid 1 on the 300gb 10k drives. And use those for your VM's where possible

 

Think I'd think about Raid10 on the 2tb's for 4tb usable capacity.

Suppose you might go Raid5 (3x2tb) plus a spare?

RAID 10 on the 7200rpm drives f'sure. The chances of a second failure on a RAID 5 array during a rebuild increase exponentially the bigger the drives in the array. RAID 5 isn't worth the risk and RAID 6 with four drives is entirely pointless.

Raid 1 for the 300GB's. Raid 10 for 2TB's.

 

I try to avoid Raid 5/6 where I can.

 

I'm sure with raid 10 you got 4x read speed and 2x write. (Don't quote me 100% as it was a raid calculator.)
