Staff access to tumblr

Hi

 

The Head of Art at my place is keen on using tumblr with students, to help them create an online gallery and share resources. The reason for the request, was she had visited a school which allows use of it.

 

I am concerned that this contravenes the schools staff AUP policy, as for unmonitored communication between students and staff.

Also concerned about the dubious content that could be found on the platform.

 

Are there any school’s allowing access to tumblr out there?

 

Is there any way to lock down access to content that is uploaded?

We don't allow it (nor pinterest which our head of art keeps asking for), in the end with so many repeated requests for the same thing over and over (worded "The pupils NEED it to do their coursework") we just started saying "show us the art syllabus that states pupils must have access to pinterest in order to pass" and the silence that came back just proved the point entirely.

Not a chance. The site contains hardcore pornography, so it is never going to be unblocked at any of our schools!

Nope, absolutely not... I'd be tempted to demonstrate on a non-school device if they're awkward about it, see how embarrassed they are when you show them what they're asking to have access to... They made changes a while ago to make it more difficult to stumble across inappropriate content - not being able to search for it etc. but that didn't seem to stop anyone... Tumblr now provides a way for content creators to tag stuff as porn, but almost no one does and Tumblr don't seem to do anything to enforce it. So without a good way of filtering that porn out, allowing it sounds like a bad idea.

Had the same thing with Tumblr and in the end it stayed blocked as Smoothwall also confirmed the safe search features are ineffective.
