Michael Posted March 13, 2008 Posted March 13, 2008 Common noises coming from a server are either an engine type noise, which is typically a dead fan trying to spin or a ping pong ball noise which is usually a dead hard drive. Never heard of a clip clopping noise

If it's metallic sounding then probably the HDD is failing.

But yes check cables on fans...dying fans (don't forget the PSU!) hardrives are a big issue. Any tapes stuck in drives maybe causing an issue? I've heard floppy drives (God...dead technology) make a similar noise in the past too.........
enjay Posted March 14, 2008 Posted March 14, 2008 A cable in contact with the fan is the most likely, closely followed by a faulty fan (that is typically more of a grating, grinding noise than the clicking you describe though). Remember servers have lots of fans, so don't just check the obvious one over the CPU - I spent ages trying to even find one of the case fans recently let alone move the cable I'd just knocked onto it!

SteveT Posted March 14, 2008 Posted March 14, 2008 Start ---> Run ---> NoSe and see what results. Then cmd and \\servername /wipe/nose should clear it.
