IE v Google Chrome : Teacher wants to have her cake and eat it!

When teacher A uses our email system on IE she can do the following:

 

Open an email with an attachment which causes a prompt of "Open, Save or Cancel"

 

If they want to just do a quick print, they click "Open" (it saves in their temp. internet folder on the C:\ drive which they don't care about nor can access anyway) - WORD for example will open and they can then print and close.

If they want to save, well, they click save and choose the correct location.

 

 

When teacher A uses our email system on Google Chrome it does the following:

 

On clicking the email attachment it immediately saves it to the location we set via the chrome GPO - which is her H:\ drive.

If all she wants to do is Print the attachment she then has to remember to delete the temp. file from her H:\ drive! - which she sees as an unnecessary step!

If she wants to save the document somewhere she has to save it first to her H:\ drive and then cut-n-paste the document.

 

 

Does anyone know if it's possible to get Chrome to behave more like IE for this user?

Depends how your GPO is set.

 

You have preference and forced settings for Chrome. You can set the Preferred Downloads setting as H:\ in the GPO (instead of forced), meaning that will be the default for all users, but they can override this setting then, meaning you can change it on her machine to prompt for save location and I believe this should give you the desired effect.

I think one of the options should be open if it's a word file for example. Would installing the Google Apps or Office Plugins not be a solution either? Open in browser possibly

Even IE saves a document before opening it - to a temporary file. I agree that it's done well in that the user doesn't notice.

 

To make certain file types open on your computer, instead of Chrome Downloading you have to download the file type once, then right after that download, look at the status bar at the bottom of the browser. Click the arrow next to that file and choose "always open files of this type"

Indeed, but teacher A will still be complaining that her H:\ drive is still being littered with files she only wanted to print.

 

Honestly, the only solution is to get her to use IE !

You can use the "Legacy Browser Support" Chrome extension to force a particular url to open in IE - I have this for a few websites which aren't happy with Chrome.

True, although I suppose you could create a script/scheduled task that regularly deletes everything in her Downloads folder to remove the "clutter".

In answer to original question, we have the same issue, but we've set it to download to a folder 'Chrome Downloads' instead of directly onto their drive, and advised people to clean up/delete now and then.

Install Outlook so that she can just preview files attached to e-mails... don't tell her about OST files though.... hahah!

I think I'd previously set it to their H:\ drives so staff and students could find things easily

you could add a temp drive and force all downloads there then get it to empty on logoff

That's what we've done...

 

She is sure to get confused though as there are a couple of websites which she uses which only work in Google Chrome - it will be so much effort for her to remember!!!

create shortcuts to those but do it as a program shortcut not a url so the shortcut looks something like

c:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe http://www.somewebsite.com

We have the total reverse issue with students, clicking links on their personal email to open their homework, working on it for hours and clicking save, only to log off and the file be gone because it was in a temporary folder. Why can't IE be more like chrome?

 

If it's one user with a problem, it's not the system that is the problem, its the user :-P
