Group Policy Customise Start Menu

Hi folks,

 

I want to replace the start menu for students with something customised. Historically we did this with RM Ranger, but we're moving away from this over the Summer.

 

I've spotted in GP the Windows Settings > Shortcuts section.

 

Is there a quicker way to do this, rather than having to individually create each shortcut e.g. copy the shortcuts from a set of folders?

 

If this is the only method, how are shortcuts created within folders?

 

Is there a way to disable existing shortcuts?

Not really, though please correct me if I am wrong.

When we moved away from CC3 and onto Vanilla Windows 7, I created a script to copy down the shortcuts in a folder structure down to the PC and scan if the shortcuts were valid ones based on their paths. If they were not, they were hidden. A copy of the latest version of this script can be found here, coding in PowerShell.

If you want a configurable start menu then Classic Start Menu is a good shout. We have a start menu that's built on login based on user type and installed software.
