I've just downloaded a 4.55GB ISO image off the net......

Does anyone know how I can fit this on to a bog-standard single layer 4.7GB DVD-R because the website I've pulled it off seems to think it's normal......d'oh! Stupido Muppets. Like I really want to overburn.

Just to clarify, to myself as well as others. A standard DVD-5 holds 4,700,000,000 bytes of data so can hold 4.37Gb of data.

So, to store a 4.55Gb ISO you would need a DVD-9 disk which can hold 8,540,000,000 bytes or 7.95Gb of data.

Sorry about the confusion before.

What if you want to boot from that DVD?

DVD's have an available disc space of 4.4GB... not the 4.7GB as advertised. No idea why, very annoying too... (or at least the last 9 packs I've had all are)

What is it and what do you want to boot into? If it's an OS you're trying out then you could use Virtual PC/Server - this will happily boot a VM from an ISO

I think Techguy would know very well how to mount and ISO or even to use it in a Virtual Machine. the question he is asking is if it is possible to fit that ISO file when burning it to a standard 4.7GB DVD.

as stated by localzuk, DVD Media uses the same marketing than Hard disks manufacturers, so in the end you get this "slight" difference with the available space.. Eg. a hard disk will not matcht the stated capacity, I got one 250 GB disk and is actually 233 GB when formatted.

Anyway, I dont want to speculate what the contents are from that ISO you downloaded, because standard ISOs to burn to dvd would not generally cause trouble to fit, so as you said, the only suggestion would be to try overburn it might just fit, also you could have the choice to modify your ISO and remove something like an unnecessary folder and rebuild your image hence size will decrease.

I wouldn't recommend overburning. I've had all sorts of problems later with DVDs in the past. Even with really expensive media.

Thanks everyone for your input.

The website has since removed the link to the iso and their 'simply burn this iso to any 4.7GB DVD-R' stupid instructions after I had a rant at them this morning.
