Disposal of old PC equipment, mainly monitors

Can anyone tell me how i can go about disposing of old PC equipment, the stockpile is building up to a ridiculous ammount.

 

I used to be able to chuck it in the skip, but am not too sure where i stand now its classed as hazardous waste.

 

any recommendations for companies that can take the stuff away, charities etc?

 

do i need to hold any documentation

Try Schools Connect - I've used these in the past, and they removed 40odd of my 15" CRT monitors (plus a few old shells of P2s) in the summer and didn't charge me a penny. I got full certification through the post a few weeks later to confirm that they'd be recycling them, and everyone was happy. Usually you do have to pay to get stuff recycled, even these guys will charge for some things.

We pass all our old kit to a charity called Hand-in-Hand, who ship the stuff to schools in Kenya & Ecuador amongst other places.

 

They are based in Essex - don't know how far they'll travel to collect.

Our Local Authority have said, but not yet written, that they are happy for schools to drop stuff of at the local recycling centre. The guys at the tip don't seem bothered and we did take A LOT of stuff over last term. Groundsman's pickup full; three times!

 

I like the idea of passing it on to a good cause, and I'll be looking into it for the future.

I have used http://www.recycle-it.ltd.uk/ in the past and they collected all of our obsolete equipment free of charge. Depending on how much you have they will generally only collect when they have a van in your area.

We work with the chairty Give Youth a Hand, they come and collect the stuff, store it and then ship it out to Croatia, Serbia etc.... the pictures they came back with were amazing, and they have been well received.

We have disposed of something like 150 monitors in less than twelve months. You do indeed have to pay to have them disposed of - it is a fun trip out of the office in the school minibus - taking all the back seats out and loading 50 monitors in at a time and driving to the recycling depot with one of the site supervisors.

 

When we called Lancashire CC about approved recycling centres they did not have a clue! We contacted a private company called Preston Recycling who charge about a quid a monitor I think.

I think we're short a few monitors here at the moment. If anyone close by (lancs) has some spare CRTs we'd be grateful of them.

@Geoff: I may have a car-ful of 15" CRTs that I don't need. Can't gaurantee the quality but I promise not to give you the ones that produce blue sparks!

 

I usually pay 1st Technologies £5/monitor to get rid of my dead ones. Stu usually picks up old base units free but I do put a lot of trade his way if I can.
