There's a few funny things I have to do when building these - obviously it has to be done from a Windows 10 machine, but the ISO etc must be hosted locally (due to network authentication not extending to the Powershell prompt). Always takes me a few tries but it does work for me, on the English International ISO of 1607.

 

I see what's happening now, I'm editing a WIM file that has been captured and that is why it doesn't work, editing an untouched WIM seems to work okay. I will probably still use the deployment script for the in-place upgrades, so that the apps get removed after an upgrade. Thanks for you help :)

no matter what I try I always get the message "Remove-AppXProvisionedPackage: The system cannot find the file specified."

That error also occurs when using the 1607 ISO from November 2016 (released Jan 2017) and an en-GB .wim. @3s-gtech had the same problem earlier in that thread. :)

The latest version of my script now uses an ISO as the source rather than a .wim to make it more obvious that you're meant to use an unmodified Microsoft ISO. I should have mentioned that somewhere. :p

Well this all explains why I've been banging my head against the wall for the past few months :p At least I know now :) Thanks @Arthur

 

Now having issues doing ANYTHING with the WIM file on Server 2012 R2, wondering if I need to go to 2016

Do you have the latest version of the ADK installed? :confused:

 

Are you trying to import the .wim into MDT or something else?

I do, going to try and re-install it.

 

I can mount a WIM and edit it and do what I want with it, but when I commit it I get errors saying that the file is in use. I then can't delete the mount folder because I get loads of error messages saying "Element not found", it was working fine before installing the latest ADK

Holy! One thing after another :p Is it safe to just disable Secure Boot on my SCCM server?

It should be okay, but make sure you have backups just in case the SCCM server doesn't boot again. :eek:

 

Personally I would use another VM or PC. :)

I have backups :) it booted but the issue is still there. I have been using another PC but SCCM has the same issue, it can't install updates to any of the WIM files because it fails to commit the image.

 

Thought it might have been the disk but it happens on another disk too.

 

There is an old windows kit for 8.1 installed that won't uninstall, think it could be that. Will have to see why it won't uninstall, not sure why it is still there to begin with.

Might be something I've done wrong, but has anyone noticed that their unattended.xml that was fully unattended in 1607 is now asking to confirm the installation language in 1703?

The dialog has en-GB prefilled so it is using the file contents, just not auto skipping that prompt.

 

Using the same xml with 1607 remains fully unattended.

if you do a manual install all the setup screens have changed so im not surprised

Are you using the en-US (English) or en-GB (English International) ISO?

As I test, I've put together a basic answer file - just with a few bits. On 1607, this is fully unattended but on 1703 it prompts for confirmation on the Language.

I've come across a couple of problems with this new version so far. I get a "Something went wrong. You can try again, or skip this for now." during the OOBE stage. I've created a new answer file with a new catalog file but still no luck. Setup seems to complete ok.

 

Looking at the log files it seems to be this showing the problem:

Start menu will revert back to default layout instead of the customised one created in audit mode. This worked fine in the previous build.

The PC under the TV in living room has tech preview on it, sadly can't change privacy to basic, so I may remove win 10 from it, shame as I liek it apart from that. the laptop which came with 10 is on basic, I'll double check it stays that way when it gets the creators update :(

Will Windows Server 2016 get the equivalent of the Creators Update (Redstone 2), or does it stay on Redstone 1?

I think the next major update to Windows Server 2016 will be when the next LTSB is released in 2019.

By contrast, LTSB is only due to receive revisions every two or three years. Our assumption is that, in practice, LTSB releases will be paired with Windows Server releases; the back-to-back 2015 and 2016 LTSB builds are a one-off due to Windows 10 being released more than a year before Windows Server 2016. Conventional deployments of Windows Server 2016 will, just like Windows 10 LTSB, receive 10 years of support. Releasing them simultaneously is logical from a bug-fixing perspective.

 

Nano Server deployments of Windows Server 2016, however, won't receive 10-year servicing. Instead, they'll track Windows 10 CBB.

Hey @Arthur, are you finding that the lock screen image has reverted back to the cave? The same GP that changed it on earlier versions now doesn't work - have checked my WMI filters and it's applying. This is from a UNC path - it may work locally.

Not had a chance to test that. I normally disable the lock screen though.

Same with the logon screen background. Now tried it locally - the preview shows what it should look like, but the cave appears instead. I think it's mocking me for being stuck in work by showing an exotic locale :(
