Music in Assembly

Morning,

sorry if this has been asked before (I'm sure it has but I can't find it)

Our teachers want to play pop music (I sound so old!) when children are coming into assembly, down the lines of Steps and reach for the stars and Take thats Shine. Are we legally ok to do this? Does it come under a public performance, I don't want to rain on their parade but with The Visit due soonish I'd rather make sure its ok.

With a PRS license (you're covered in England) and with music you have legally purchased, yes.

You need a PRS license to play recorded music in a public place. If you're​ a state school in England, you'll have this (you should have been sent documentation 😀 ). To meet its terms, the school needs to have purchased the music. Spotify's terms exclude use in schools. As per a thread on here last week, iTunes didn't seem to specifically, but it does say for personal use, so make a judgement.....

 

You can play YouTube videos though (streaming, not illegally downloaded!). Or buy the CD - even our budget might run to a copy of Now 3527 (or whatever we've got to now) if they just want some songs from the hit parade 😉

Spotify are working on something for Education, but there hasn't been a whole lot of information released yet. Seems like it's still very early days.
