Hi

 

My line manager wants us to set up games club at dinner. The teacher has been sending the kids onto games sites on the internet and the room has been covered with spyware. We have cleaned it up and I am trying to stop as many games sites using dansguardian. The teachers are now complaining that it is affecting the games club and wants us to run games on the network.

 

Does anyone know any good gpl games that I can copy to a server share and only give access to during the games club.

 

Or does any one have a idea how to get up a games server maybe on linux and where I can download free internet games from.

How old are your kids (some games have age requirements like movies)?

What spec are the machines?

 

The games section on Sourceforge would be a reasonable place to start.

I picked up several copies of Worms World Party from Game (3 for £10) for the kids here. They bloody love it. I regularly spend my lunchtimes kicking arse with flying sheep and banana bombs

Frozen-bubble (potentially a bit of a tosser to install)

 

Railroad tycoon is available for free these days, tho it may be a bit "old skool" for today's nippers.

 

Also:FreeCol, FreeCiv (played the former extensively) and battle for wesnoth. All win/lin and open source.

 

True geek factor: try getting hold of "nethack" - see "vultures eye" for a gui version, it does not play well as non-admin.

 

Finally - check out happypenguin.org - a bit linuxy, but many of the games have windows ports.

We have a friendly 1st person shooter, its called paintball, no blood n gore, runs really well and good graphics that work on basic machines.

If they are over the age of 11 then just download and use Americas Army (Plus server pack). it's free, you will need a good server to run it on if you are looking at 8 or more players. It is easy enforced in and out game (providing you have the gui for it) and kids will readly enjoy it. last place i was at we ran it and always got a good turn out, though if the kids figure out who you are expect to be you vs them (good job i'm an avid gamer )

Does anyone remember a game called Air Attack??

 

that used to be free, and was hosted on wire play before it shut down.

 

What an awesome game...

 

I would still play it today, the graphics arnt so good, but the playability was amazing

Hello!

 

Just picking up this thread- I'm looking for some text driven games (Like Crystal Rainforest, Granny's Garden) that the kids can play here at out primary school.

 

Most multiplayer LAN games seem to be shooters or racers (The kids LOVE Cube II and Paintball 2) They also play bitfighter.

 

But I'm looking for something to get their brains going a bit with things they have to read...

This thread is begging for somebody to mention Unreal Tournament. When I was at school there were rumours that we had it somewhere on the network but I never got a chance to play it. Grrr.

 

As far as I know you shouldn't have to much of a problem having your own LAN games. Plus it won't require an awesome spec to run it.
