Cabinet Rewire / Replace

This was my job yesterday after a couple of months planning.

 

Replace old cabinet, install new and tidy up

I have rewired (patch leads only) 4 cabinets since summer and replacing 2 (at an unknown time).

 

It takes up so much time but so worth it.

Been there done that and the feeling in the end is great. Got a stack of before and after shots from many a Saturday morning I've done.

It feels great. Can actually see the servers and replace hard drives where necessary as apposed to moving loads of network cables out of the way. Took me 11 hours. Someone had put the cables to the patch panels through various slots at the back, so I ended up grinding the cabinet down !

Niiicceee... How do you patch so neatly? Any advice for us mortals?

that's a tower'z rack right? (42u is about 350 flat packed from ebay?) if so i've just put an identical rack in this weekend in a commercial premiss i support.

 

top tips -

plan plan plan and leave space for the unplanned.

short patch cables - i use 50cm but i interleave switch and patch panels. (switch, cable mgmt, patch, patch, cable mgmt, switch, repeat)

don't put things in the bottom 4u - it can make getting cables up a nightmare in the future if it's a 600mm wide rack.

always go for a rack that is 600 by 800 or bigger.

I was in the mind of having all switches at the bottom. But if you don't go mad on Edge switch cost a 1:1 patch port to switch port ratio laid out as this, with short cables is def the way to go.

 

We have 450 edge switches in total and are leaning to this config where ever possible now.

Yes its a 37u cabinet.

 

Basically put 5 patches at the bottom, then 4 switches, then further 4 patches. Keep the wires to 50cm. The yellow ones are the phones, that are patched into a different switch. The majority of phones are on the top patch panel so I put that one nearest the phone switch

Nice jobs.

I'd love to rewire all ours and do a patch/switch/patch config. I know it is wasteful but is so much easier and to be fair, most our patch panels and switches are full so there wouldn't be that much waste.

Yes, we had to grind the old cabinet apart to get the patch panels out without re-wiring so was covering the smoke detector
