Migrating to 365 email when you don't have admin access to the last 365 server

Hi all,

 

Moved into a new job, their email is run by the LEA which is HORRIBLE and they don't give out admin passwords, all new users and password requests go through them and a few days later they may be done.

 

Have setup out own O365 online exchange and trying to think of ways of migrating people's emails.

 

Best I can think of is to get everyone to login to outlook 2010/2013. Let it sync and then go round and export people's data. Not a fun task.

 

Can anyone think of any other way?

If you do this, are you planning on using a new email domain, or changing the MX records etc across to your new tenant?

I've never had to migrate from 365, but unless they give you an account either with Admin access, or create an account that gives you permission to every single mailbox, I believe having to get everyone's password will be what you need to do. I had to do that to move from RM EasyMail (or reset it, as luckily had the rights to reset passwords) to Office 365.

 

Surely a request could be put in to transfer administrative rights from the LEA support to yourself though, even if it needs sign off from the head... it would be plum crazy to turn it down if your going to be migrating either way.

The current email domain is used by most schools in the county so not something they would give us.

 

Could be a reset all passwords the log in one at a time during the holidays and exporting myself.

Trying to find a piece of software that will do this rather than outlook.

No powershel or co-operative support for the old system.

2 ways I can think

 

1. IMAP migration, you will just need to know the users mailbox passwords. However this doesn't migrate contacts and calendars. Only mail.

2. Import / Export PST from Outlook.

Microsoft seriously need to introduce Tenancy > Tenancy migrations. Exporting everyone's Mailbox is just ridiculous!

Agree! I have one coming up at the end of Feb and another before summer. Urgh!

Similar situation for some of our schools. We used the bulk imap import method for e mail. It was all we could do really.

If your current supplier has a hybrid solution you can move the mailboxes back to on prem. Then import them somehow to your new tenancy.

LEA are being completely uncooperative.

 

Have tried every setting to get the mailboxes to imap over but fails every time.

I'd still do it the PST way, as this guarantees you get everything. Might take longer, but it's the result you want.

I'd also do it the PST way, its not that big of an issue assuming you have everyone already on an outlook client somewhere.

i was trying to add windows store for business and a few odds and ends that require admin access to the office 365 tenancy but because of the way its set up (basically all schools are in 1 tennancy i believe and they cant/wont give out admin access to a sub section of them and as its 1 tenancy anyway i can imagine it being a licensing nightmare if anyone wants stuff from ms store for business as technically if school a buys 20 minecraft lics in theory they are avaliable to school b)they cant/wouldnt give me access so in the end that school has a new tenancy just for minecraft licensing at the moment (but as its a much shorter domain name i suspect long term it will get moved to that to get the lea isp out as they arnt exactly thrilled with their service

It's poorly thought out on their behalf. If schools were part of a Trust, that's different as their requirements are the same or similar, but dealing with many different/separate identities (schools), it's inevitable their requirements over time will differ.

Can't get out quick enough.

 

Just before leaving today though I managed to get it to sync the test account through imap.

 

At least I don't have to log every one in to download and then log every one into the new system to import.

 

In going to tell staff how to export their contacts through owa and make that their responsibility.

 

Not the end of the world if they forget as I will still have access to their old emails.
