Hi Guys

So after moving in we left a couple of marks on the walls while we where moving furniture in and out the house, I decided this weekend to buy some paint and fix it up a bit. I painted the bits that needed doing but the recess by the front door was pretty badly marked so I decided to paint this.

It all seemed to dry and looked very good except I noticed there was part of the wall that didn't seem to dry, I left the paint to dry over the weekend and checked it this morning and it still looks damp... I'm not sure if this is actual damp or something wrong with the paint? It wasn't there before I painted it so I'm not sure if it is the paint?

This picture was taken this morning 2 days after the painting:

Any help or advice will be most appreciated!! :)

Maybe just a bit discoloured, stick some more paint over it. It can be a funny substance depending what was underneath or how much paint you get on the brush.

There is a metal thing on the corners under the plaster. So the plaster is thinner in those areas. It might be that the paint hasn't soaked into the plaster due to the layer being thinner.

My main worry is that when we viewed the same bit of wall had damp on and was one of the things we told them to fix which they apparently did. It was just a standard matte white paint that was on it before but as I say that didn't show any signs of damp when the old paint was on it :( Sick of the issues with this house!!

Good point I'm hoping this is the case the opposite side on the corner hasn't had this same problem is all.

Is this is solid wall or some kind of pipework boxing?

If its not solid and is where pipes run up and down it may be moisture trapped inside causing potential problems. If this is so it might be an idea to go get a vent grill and then cut out a section to install a vent or fit an inspection door with the grill built in.

I'm really not sure, there is a radiator near that wall so maybe?

If it was previously stained by water you would need to seal it as the old stain will come right through emulsion.

You can buy a fancy product from B&Q or just use gloss paint. Wait for it to dry and then emulsion over it.

Only do this if your sure its not still damp or eventually it will come through again.

The metal on the corners will be the galvanised skim bead sometimes they rust due to underlying damp problems, and after remedial work the painter will paint gloss or a damp proof paint to prevent the damp from coming through the new coat of paint and causing it to break up. If a damp proof paint has been used before then your coat could take longer to dry and it may take a couple of extra coats to match it all up.

If the area has been fixed then it is possible that the plaster hasn't been allowed to dry - and hence any water based paint won't dry either

Glossing over it will possibly just seal the water in which ain't ideal

I would leave it a few week with the nearest radiator on and see what happens

not that I am an expert in any way so I could be talking BS

If it was damp before when you looked at the house, do you know if they actually did anything.

I've looked round houses before where it's obvious that they've bodged it by just covering it over for the viewings, hoping that it wouldn't be spotted.
