Back onto topic, I like them they do see more modern, the old yellow glow just feels outdated now and the few LED lamps i have seen do seem a lot brighter. But they are strange at 1st!

 

Agreed. I remember the first ones I came across a couple of years back. I couldn't understand why I could see the road illuminated yet couldn't see the lights themselves (I was coming down a hill into a village).

it does have the side effect that you can't walk around the house at night relying on the lights from the street illuminating certain areas now!

Many of the houses around me are now fitting solar LED's to the overhang around their houses to combat that now. It started off with one house about a year ago, now there is around 20 of them!

Leicester city got leds a year or two ago. Cross the border into the county and they have old sodium lights which often get turned off at night. I know which I prefer.

Ours still go off from midnight to some hour in the morning before I get up (except at junctions, they stay on)

We've got blackout blinds fitted now, but it's still like daylight through the cracks.

They swapped the ones around my house a few weeks ago. I must say that I dislike them - the light is too directional leaving dark patches in between brightly lit patches. And when I'm driving, as I pass under the lights, they're almost too bright as they go overhead.

They swapped the ones around my house a few weeks ago. I must say that I dislike them - the light is too directional leaving dark patches in between brightly lit patches. And when I'm driving, as I pass under the lights, they're almost too bright as they go overhead.

 

The ones being deployed in residential areas are designed to prevent light pollution which is why they are directed like that. I like them, it's made a hell of a difference to the night sky where I live.

The BBC article shows ones in the US and by the look of it do not have the directional shielding we have over here.
