lbradley Posted November 28, 2016 Posted November 28, 2016 Has anyone got any firmware at all they can share? We're running firmware 3 versions below what it's on now I think. Running 3.6.1 at the moment but can't upgrade because I don't have a Meru account to download newer firmware. Wondered if anybody had a newer version kicking around I could nick. Thanks.
nolamarc Posted December 21, 2016 Posted December 21, 2016 did you ever find the firmware you were looking for?
lbradley Posted December 21, 2016 Author Posted December 21, 2016 No mate not yet, you wouldn't have it would you?
twin--turbo Posted December 21, 2016 Posted December 21, 2016 err, this is a legit forum. Not one four touting around F/W that your not entitled to own. TT
lbradley Posted December 21, 2016 Author Posted December 21, 2016 Err point me in the right direction then. I've contacted Fortinet who don't seem interested. Said kits too old. Seems a waste seen as though our company only bought it 4 or 5 year ago.
twin--turbo Posted December 21, 2016 Posted December 21, 2016 It went End of sale April 2013, EOL April 2016. If it was on a support contract Meru/Fortinet/reseller would probably have offered a reasonable upgrade path on the controller probably to a virtual platform. 4-5 years is actually a reasonable life span on a Wireless Controller, physical ones are rapidly disappearing altogether. You may still get a trade in or discount on a new controller if you say your going to Xirruss/Rukus/Meraki TT
lbradley Posted December 22, 2016 Author Posted December 22, 2016 OK excellent. Thanks for the information TT
TechieWils Posted December 22, 2016 Posted December 22, 2016 Just a heads up, before Meru were brought out you could login and download a firmware for free. 2 years ago we had to upgrade ours for some new access points to 5.5 I think but I downloaded 6.1 as well just in case. Obviously forgot when it needed another upgrade after meru were brought and was told I been a £1000 support contract just to get the firmware. I laughed down the phone and searched as I knew I had it somewhere and luckily found it. Won't be purchasing Meru again. 1
twin--turbo Posted December 22, 2016 Posted December 22, 2016 They are all relatively keen to keep their share of the market, as the virtual platforms have no hardware cost an upgrade to that is relatively free for them ( you would need hyper-V or Vmware) My last place had a MC1500 and AP320's installed winter 2k10 ( Dumping a Cisco system that was only 2.5 years old when we moved buildings). The Meru was replaced this summer with Xirrus. I use Meraki and am fairly happy with it, as the licences are transferable and Co-Termed it's easy to manage and devices can be added or replaced easily. If you plan to stick with them then the licence cost comes way down and you just worry about hardware refreshing. Many swear by UniFi and it's a good budget option. For home I am looking at Edimax CAP1200 which can also be managed similar to the UniFi but come in much cheaper. As I say the HARD controller has had it's day, I was sceptical 3 years ago when we started to look at replacing the MC1500, but things do move on. If there is no ISSUE with the current platform, use it for as long as it works effectively. TT
thedman83 Posted August 30, 2017 Posted August 30, 2017 (edited) Just kind of sad, don't need support, I volunteer that. I know the equipment. The firmware or IP if you want to call it that is only good to people with old hardware anyway. I understand that they want to sell new equipment and the profit margin needed, but I would think these companies when provided legitimate proof that they are trying to be used in low or no budget non-for-profit organizations could just make the firmware/licenses available. Still very useful hardware for the needs of small NP's and saves the landfill. Just seems to me at least on a per case basis, the right thing to do. Fortinet refuses though, I have pleaded. AlanD Posted September 10, 2017 Posted September 10, 2017 . As I say the HARD controller has had it's day, I was sceptical 3 years ago when we started to look at replacing the MC1500, but things do move on. TT I'm not so sure about the demise of a hard controller. Things seem to go around in cicles, and while it's true cloud based solutions have some current advantages, particularly for managing multi sites, it is not so attractive for pro active layer 7 montitoring and filtering where for even a small site significant amounts of external bandwidth is lost simply managing the access points. If access points are empowered to communicate and negotiate independently of a controller then a cloud enabled "manager" can work well..and continue to work if external internet fails. But if you want cut down access points that defer to a controller to decide which clients connect to whic access point and when to roam clients you might decide that functionality is best kept on site otherwise any failure in your internet connection would probably mean wires did not work to even local servers.
gtranter Posted September 19, 2017 Posted September 19, 2017 bit late to this bandwagon but i had the same headache on finding firmware for one of my schools Meru system. i have a login to the fortinet downloads and sorry to say they only list firmware updates for the MC1550, MC1550V, MC3200, MC3200V, MC4200, MC4200V and MC6000. not the MC1550.

Even later to the party, however, I bring good news if you're still looking (anyone) I have Upgrades to v6, v7, v8 and all release docs and cli commands if they are any good to people. Thanks

AlanD Posted September 20, 2018 Posted September 20, 2018 Many swear by UniFi and it's a good budget option. That sort of comment always makes me smile. Its a fine enterprise solution. Yes, Like Lidl and Aldi its a market disrupter with a different marking philosophy. There is nothing wrong with the food they sell - although it may come in different packaging. And there is nothing wrong with Unify either. I bought new tyres the other day. Was offered "budget" tyres, Mid range and Premium. I then asked for the A/B/C rating for breaking distance, wear, etc (much to the surprise of the seller). The budget tyres came out on top in every category....for almost half the money. Some always insist in shopping at Waitrose...and some always insist on Cisco/Meraki products. Not because they are better. - but simply because they feel comfortable with the name on the box.

Thanks Hello, Would it be possible for the MC1500 Firmware packages please? You would be a legend!
lbradley Posted November 5, 2018 Author Posted November 5, 2018 Wouldn't mind a PM too, with firmware, if that's OK.
IAMCloud_Curt Posted November 21, 2018 Posted November 21, 2018 Really sorry for the late reply, hope you are all well. I haven't been on here for yonks, bogged down with a few projects. Link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1RmAVoZHTKXeYTD85nGOqda-3HO8yaQ_Z/view?usp=sharing
