I had another go, but this time dragged and dropped some folders from the "Shared with me" folder to a Team Drive and it worked! A little box pops up saying "Migration process has begun..." and a few seconds later the folders appear in the Team Drive. :)

 

Are you an admin? I think admin users can do this?

 

G suite administrators and delegated admins can migrate existing My Drive folders into Team Drives. Use this feature to help users adopt Team Drives.

Ask the users to give your administrator account view access or higher to the existing folders.

Ask the users to add you as a member of the Team Drive where the folders will be moved. You must have edit or full access.

Open drive.google.com on a web browsers and confirm that you are logged in to your administrator account (click the account icon in the upper left hand corner). Log out and log back in to your administrator account if necessary.

Expand the My Drive and Team Drives in the browser window to display the My Drive folders you want to move, and the Team Drive folders where you will move them.

Drag and drop the folder(s) from My Drive to the Team Drive.

Accept the confirmation message to begin the migration process.

My experience was that they appeared eventually.... I had a few moments of panic and couldn't work out where they'd gone. I also had spinning timers instead of lists of files when moving to different folders. Resolved after signing out and in again.

 

I'd love to know what actually happens when you "migrate" files; I'd assumed that it was essentially a file permissions thing, but it feels like they're actually moving somewhere physically different.

Its made a load of duplicate empty folders as well. What a pain!

 

How do I get these files back?

If you go back to the original location is there not a revision history in a panel on the right, i.e. "You moved blah file"which you could click on to undo the move?

I think you can. When you create a group, it gets an email address for the group. You then share to the group's email address. It then only counts the group as sharing with one other irrespective of how many people are in the group. When you add people to the group they should automatically get access to the team drive.

 

If I've got it wrong, I've got a problem....

That's how I share our team drives. Works well so far.

I've found some groups you can find by just typing the group name. Others I had to put in the full email address.
