New domain

I didn't get to setup my new domain over the summer holidays which I was hoping to due to a lot of things outside my control, so I'm going for next summer now. What do I call my new domain though? Our OWA web address is mail.school.suffolk.sch.uk and have a certificate for this, but that is about the only place we use that FQDN. All of our email addresses, and our website are school.co.uk. We don't use O365 yet as our internet connection isn't brilliant, but it's all set up with the school.co.uk addresses as the usernames. So presumably I go for ad.school.co.uk rather than ad.school.suffolk.sch.uk?

I'd agree just go for school.co.uk and avoid anything.local.

Yep just use your current email address domain.

 

Also move to Office 365 as soon as possible so it all works nicely together. You really don't even need "good" internet to use it. It should work fine on virtually any connection.

MS say nowadays don't use .local.

 

I'd use whatever you want your FQDN to be externally.... your .co.uk You'll be glad of it when you move to O365 or Google.

I wouldn't use school.co.uk but create a subdomain like academy.school.co.uk

So you dont have to run any powershell rubbish to change the users domain when you sync.

Set the AD up right and it doesn't matter what domain you have - either in AD or Office 365.

No our local domain is our old .sch.uk. I also have that domain set up in O365. Whenever we do a sync it defaults new users email address to that regardless of whats set in the email field or in the proxy address in AD.

 

Have to powershell it to change it.

You shouldn't have to change the domain once synced. If you do then something isn't set right

we changed from schoolname.suffolk.sch.uk to just schoolname.school using one of the new tlds last year - makes for a very short email address

Sorry. Thats me being a complete div. Yes of course.

 

However I'd need a new domain setting up. Only that one at present.

 

Must look into that. I just left it for simplicities sake when we left the local authority. Cheers @snagrat

I've created my new domain as ad.schoolname.co.uk, so of course all my users are username@ad.schoolname.co.uk. I don't like the "ad" bit in there, looks untidy. How do I get all new users to just be username@schoolname.co.uk so that it will sync nicely up with O365?

Follow the link in my previous post and create a new domain suffix of school.co.uk. Then if you go back to AD and open the properties for a user and click the account tab you should be able to select the new suffix from the drop down list. You can either multi-select users in AD and change the settings on bulk or use a Powershell script.

 

You might just want to test the above on a single account to check everything works okay with Office 365 before doing any bulk changes.
