Cannot delete / amend file (permissions issue)

Hi guys.

We've got several documents on our file server that are causing errors on our overnight backup. Upon looking at them I cannot delete them or add myself as the owner under properties > security > advanced. When looking at the file share from another computer the files don't even show up at all, you can only see them on the file server.

I've attached two screen grabs of the error messages I'm getting. I've tried takeown in cmd which said ownership was successful but still greeted with the same errors. Going crazy here!!! Don't really want to be using any third party software on our file server but up for recommendations. Any help would be really appreciated.

Thank youuuu!

I'm not sure if this is the same issue, but I seem to remember having something like this before.

Can't tell you what caused it, but it seemed to me there was a deletion issue.

The files could be seen on the server but not from the share.

They just seemed to be a remnant left over from something deleting/replication/moving, I rebooted the server and they had gone.

I've also seen it where they've just disappeared by the next day too...

Is the path to the file too long? If so can you create a share a few levels above and then browse to the new share and then set the permissions so that you can then delete the file from the new share?

Take Ownership of the files using this handly reg hack. (It says Vista, but still works on 7 and 10)

Bounce the server first, if you can, to make sure no processes are using the files.

Once you've taken ownership of them you should be able to use the Replace all child object permission entries with inheritable permission entries from this object option in Advanced Security Settings of the root folder to grant yourself full control of all the files below.

Should be able to take ownership then change permissions.Read any prompts on screen, it will prob ask you to close dialog and then go back in and change permissions to do what you need to do.
