You do shutdown on lid and button because kids don't log out and shut lid and they go into hybernate and they used power. Because they don't start they done apply good correctly and you get called out because someone is logged on and they only always plug them into the power meaning even on reduced power they drain the battery

Hibernate doesn't use power though. Standby uses some power, whether that's more power than shutting down and booting up again is another matter.

If someone's logged in you can always reboot. Could set a scheduled task to reboot at midnight too.

Different setups work for different schools, here I've had then to not shutdown on button press of lid close and the main problem I had was that they'd rarely get shut down and then when they were the entire lesson would be wasted because the laptops start updating.

I have them set to shutdown on lid close now and don't have half as many issues as previous, now they are all ready to use withing a couple of minutes and if the kids forget to save their work they loose it but a I guarantee they'll only do it once because having to redo something because you rushed tends to be a big enough kick to make sure you do it right next time.

Our kids don't use laptops until they get into year 2 and then it's only in groups of 10 where a TA can supervise them closely, before year 2 they use iPads and that works out just fine for us, but like I said the same setup may not work in your school, it's all a learning experience until you find what works for you.

Having just had a department 'lose' yet another ipad I'm even more keen on suites. At least they don't diminish from 20,19,18,17....15 during the course of the year!

...you can't the pick keys off iPads. I think tablets is how many "experience" and use IT in the real world now - as consumers of ICT - not necessarily as producers of it. As such I think they should be encouraged in schools. Work really well with things like Google classroom. Why would you want to use laptops?

Dunno - all I do know is that we have 70 Yogas which fold to be used as tablets, and they never are. The children use them as laptops as it is easier to produce documents with the keyboard

This is where departments and schools can vary. When we replaced a load of netbooks trolleys we have the departments the option of iPads or surfaces. It was split roughly 60/40 in favour of the ipads.

A year later the surfaces are used regularly. The ipads very little, and we have had next to no requests for apps to be installed (we use meraki so little or no inconvenience)

In fact some of the departments are just using the ipads as personal devices now. The ons left over from loss or damage anyway!

If you're in school you should be a creator, not a consumer. The majority of things you're doing involve typing, so you need a keyboard.

Some subjects can use ablet effectivly - but really just fro research for stuff which is then written down. In fact I have seen them used specifically for this when the teacher needed the kids to do more writing

i.e. tablet - therefore no keyboard - therefore no Powerpoint - therefore you need to write in in your book

and there are some useful apps I suppose

but mostly - you need a keyboard

They are also set to shut down on lid close but if someone is still logged on with an unsaved document it blocks it from doing so... wouldn't be a problem if we could have left switch user disabled.

I have just looked at this again, and it turns out the Group Policy Preference for a power plan doesn't actually work when you specify a "what to do when they close the lid"... however if you set it here:

Computer Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\System\Power Management\Button Settings

it does work.

We had this happen to us and we moved to two laptop trolleys. The biggest issues I have are software roll out and Windows updates. If I am being honest I would do everything you can to keep the suite. No matter what, it is much cheaper in the long run.

23 out of 70 laptops not plugged in this morning. :(

That's why we still have an IT suite

a couple of weeks ago i noticed the laptop trolley was a bit messy so tidied up the cables and in the process junked about half the power supplies as they had been shut in the door so often you could see bare wires on the cables. Staff let kids put them away and they just get shoved in any old how

The bottom one (or two on one of the trolleys) shelves on ours have gotten like that, at least here they seem to be breaking the cables at the same rate that they are breaking the laptops beyond repair so the broken shelves can just stay empty...

We "lost" our ICT suite sometime ago, it's now Deputy Head & my office which makes for interesting combination but that's another story. Over Infant (180) & Junior (240) schools I've got 180 laptops in trolleys and we don't have an issue with laptops not being plugged in to charge (staff check and lock cabinets). They're used throughout the day and we use the library for IT clubs. It also means staff can grab a laptop to use at anytime rather than having to wait for PC to be available in class. Robust WIFI is the key - we've just upgraded with Aerohive AND stopped staff using their mobile phones on it which gave up a surprising amount of bandwidth!

Yes infants & juniors manage to get keys off, but a robust monitoring by staff has meant that culprits are caught and don't like the end result! :)

Personal devices get put on different SSIDs with lower QoS priority

Aerohive units are good. We use them. Don't like their subscription costs though - so tend to think Ubiquiti is a more cost effective option. I think I would be using MAC keys for identification for the school's own devices. Yes it will be faff to enter all those mac keys ..actually you can probably just connect all the laptops and then authorise those MAC keys - and then deny everything else. Then use a separate SSID with a key if you want to support other devices. Then students have nothing to steal.
