Wirral_Wonderer Posted October 17, 2016 Posted October 17, 2016 We have a member of staff who has been told by her Dr and OT that she needs a mic and amp system in her classroom, otherwise she will risk damaging her vocal cords further and losing her voice permanently. I know there are some very nice (and very expensive) systems out there, but what do people use in the real world for voice amplification? At the moment I am thinking of a wireless lapel mic linked up to the classroom speakers - I know this not ideal, but was using it as very short term solution. Any ideas? Thanks Jeremy
localzuk Posted October 17, 2016 Posted October 17, 2016 (edited) In schools, for this sort of thing, I've mostly seen Soundfield type systems. It might be worth speaking to a specialist such as PC Werth - About Sound for Schools - PC Werth The thing to remember is that it isn't just about amplifying the voice, clarity is also key for those listening. Traditional "speaker at the front" systems have a flaw in that those at the front get blasted with loud audio, and those at the back get quieter audio. So, no-one really gets the best out of it. LeMarchand Posted October 17, 2016 Posted October 17, 2016 Not got any personal experience, but this seems like it might be worth a punt: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Zoweetek®-Wireless-Amplifier-Microphone-Teachers/dp/B01EFI663M Depending on the teacher, you could look at throat mics if they would appreciate the chance to feel like they were in a tactical unit whilst in their classroom. (I would!)
Andrew_C Posted October 17, 2016 Posted October 17, 2016 Can you borrow a radio mic from drama/music to try it out? If not maybe a local theatre or theatrical hire company could advise. A system could be bought for £50 or so that could be connected to the existing classroom sound system. 1
Wirral_Wonderer Posted October 17, 2016 Author Posted October 17, 2016 Thanks LeMarchand , maybe full body Armour as well!, however not sure if the Zoweetek would do the job.
3s-gtech Posted October 17, 2016 Posted October 17, 2016 (edited) We've had a couple of radio mics for this, but my favourite has been a little Samson Airline Micro. I was buying batteries in bulk to power the damn things before, and rechargeables wouldn't last a double lesson. The Airline has a built in Lithium ion battery in the base and headset, both charged by USB. The current one has lasted for several years in use, and will be replaced with another when it dies. Going rate is £220 inc VAT - that's pretty easy to justify. We just connected it to a neat little mixer amp and a pair of voice-reinforcement (small, cheap) drivers. LeMarchand Posted October 17, 2016 Posted October 17, 2016 Thanks LeMarchand , maybe full body Armour as well! Do it! Lima Sierra Alpha One, Johnny Smith isn't on task. Terminate with extreme prejudice!
