2010 21" iMac Ram

As above looking upgrading our macs to 8 or even 16GB of ram as they are lacking speed. (too much hassle to replace the hard as it involes taking the screen out)

 

What the best ram that will work with the Macs?

RAM wise they're pretty flexible. Get 1333MHz stuff, matched pair. 16GB should be fine. Don't pay a premium for Apple verified, but your reseller may be able to advise further.

 

Don't write off fitting an SSD. It totally transforms these machines, and it's not that hard. You need two sucker cups (like dent pullers), a good set of Torx bits, and a caddy or some double sided tape to hold the SSD. Each one took me about 10 minutes. I think there are something like 20 screws to remove, then the inverter cable from the back of the screen. You don't need to remove the screen, it just lifts out of the way to one side.

You sure it's RAM that's the issue, how much do they have now?

 

If it's 4GB, I'd say an SSD will probably prove a better purchase and as stated above, much easier to fit than you think.

They take standard laptops SODIMMS, PC3-10600S, but will happily take 12800S and clock the speed down.

 

I think they have four slots as well so you could save money by fitting 2gb sodimms or go crazy and fit 4 x 4gb for 16gb total

I had terrible performance with OSX 10.10 on a late 2009 iMac with 2gb. However installed 10.11 today and it's very much usable.

 

I have however fitted an ssd to a similar model and the difference is remarkable. It wasn't as tricky as I thought removing the screen.
