[sccm 2012] Hardware needs of a distribution point and Software update server

So, I am getting ready to put in an SCCM Distribution Point and a Software Update Server (2 roles in SCCM) at 5 other schools, all utilising our existing SCCM site server over our WAN.

 

I want to make sure I get the install right, and as such want to make sure I have enough RAM etc... for this to run.

 

MS recommendations are always way over the top. Their advice would have my server here running 32GB RAM+ but it actually only has 16GB and only uses 13GB of that.

 

So, what sort of requirements should I be looking at? 4 of the schools are primaries, so only have up to 100 PCs. The other is a middle school that has about 100 PCs too (though this will grow).

If you're looking at DP and SUP, then biggest resource would be disk space. I have DP (but not SUP) running on one of our primaries all-in-one server which until summer only had 4GB RAM in (and was doing SIMs etc). Wasn't fast or pretty, but worked. Are you going VM or physical?

Sorry don't have anything to add, but I've had my head deep in SCCM for ages now and hearing your intentions of multiple DPs across a WAN sounds a pretty exciting project to me. Good luck with it.

At the moment, it'll be going on their existing servers, so physical. Future plans are crawling along to move to a new domain across the schools but until then I need to do something as none of the schools have any imaging solution at all!

 

Disk space shouldn't be too much of a problem. As they all have plenty of that (on random partitions not doing anything).

Yeah, I've looked at the official advice, but with their advice I'd be looking at 24GB RAM per school... Which is more than we use here for our entire SCCM server.

As a guide, my primary has about 150 machines and our site server hovers around 7GB RAM usage. But that's a site server so running a DP and SUP should consume less than that per site.

 

Personally I like to throw as much RAM at SCCM as I can. 32GB might not actually be far off what you need.

@localzuk mine is setup in a single sccm site currently spanning 5 secondary schools and one primary school. My primary site (not primary school) is running in a VM with 16gb and 4 vCPU (E5-2680v4), 50GB for System drive and about 420GB for sources. With a DP in each school running just as a DP (SU is on management point), each has 4gb-8gb ram 1-2vCPU and 150-250GB drives depending on size of site. Have really not noticed any bottlenecks with the hardware spec used, basically the only bottleneck I've seen has been with the WAN links (only 100Mb and 10Mb to a primary!).
