Laptops for staff use

Hi,

 

I know that this comes up regularly but... we need to buy some laptops for staff. Must be durable, fast and... reasonably cheap.

 

unfortunately refurbs are out of the question

Speak to @VeryPC_Colin_M. We have been happily buying their ThinBooks here. We buy the 15" HD model, with i5 CPU, 8GB RAM, 240GB SSD, 5 year warranty etc.. for around £500 each. Oh, and we have a custom design printed on vinyl on the top - looks great, and reduces the risk of theft!

 

I went out and got comparable quotes for the same spec from Dell and HP - price was £899 from Dell and over £1000 from HP!

+1 for @VeryPC_Colin_M if you want custom built and nice vinyl lid (they look amazing).

 

If you're happy with off the shelf laptops, Misco have a good deal on Lenovo.

Personally I would go for refurbs but .... staff ... big sigh ... you all know the score!

We get good deals with Dell so we give out E5470's.

Hehe, we get this from time to time., but we have some lovely Dell E6430's that look great and cost less than £300 each

 

Loads of primaries around Stoke use us for staff machines if you want some leverage

We used to buy dell, but warranty didn't cover "I dropped my laptop and smashed the screen while spilling coffee over it". So we now buy cheaper HP 250 series (now G5) which comes with i5 4/8Gb ram and we purchase an ssd to slot in for all under £300. Money saved in comparison to Dells gets used for any replacement parts. So far we have saved thousands of pounds each year in unused warranty.

We used to buy Dell until we had an entire batch DOA, now we just get servers from them.

 

We have 3 different models in use by staff at the moment:

 

Lenovo T440p

Lenovo X260

Lenovo Yoga 460

 

All fantastic build quality, Lenovo's 4 year NBD support has been very handy, and their SCCM driver packs are nearly as good as Dell's. We bought the Lenovo's through @Millgate and @VeryPC.

 

They're a little on the pricey end, but honestly if we can get 4 or 5 years out of them then they work out similar to Dell.

I get these. Theyre ok but the drivers are a bit rubbish on Win 7.

Don't have an issue with drivers here... but then again I don't do any imaging nowadays so I wouldn't know! [emoji3]

Their accidental damage warranty covered us with wine spilled on it and with tea poured over it by a staff member's child (so they claim). I don't think we ever used it more than it cost us though. Now we don't buy staff devices (in theory)
