NVidia Quadro M1000M graphics card can't handle splitters

Hi folks, this is a bit of an obscure one - I've already asked NVidia themselves about this and they haven'[t come up with any recommendations so far, and I've also spoken to HP. I'm not getting anywhere with this strange predicament yet!

 

We've leased some very posh new laptops: HP ZBook Studio G3 which have some really nice spec. However, staff that have our old classroom setup (nothing to do with me I hasten to add) are having no end of problems getting these laptops to display properly.

 

The setup is as follows:

 

HDMI connection from laptop into cheap HDMI splitter, which then goes into two non-interactive flat screen TVs at either end of the classroom.

The existence of the splitter seems to cause massive problems for this fancy graphics card, it will NOT duplicate onto all the screens.

 

For some reason when I try to duplicate, it designates both screens 1 and 2 to the laptop screen, and designates the TVs via a splitter as screen 3. It will only duplicate to 1 and 2, and never 3. If I try to remove screen 2 in the NVidia control panel and just have screen 1 and 3, it extends onto 3 only. As soon as I choose duplicate (win key plus P) screen 2 reappears!

 

Has anyone had any similar issues?? It's a bizarre one for sure.

Is your laptop touch screen? Or does it have the ability to be.

 

If so there might be a setting in BIOS, we have had a VeryPC machien that shows screen 1 and 2 on the normal monitor. Though it was an Intel chipset doing it, basically the board could support touchscreen but we didn't have it, there was a setting in Bios that turned the touchscreen layer off or something similar and got rid of the problem.

Normally those kind of issues are simply cheap splitters as you mentioned. Unless it can detect what's actually detected via the splitters and know X is X, and Y is Y they often have problems.

 

Do you have a better one to test it with?

 

But in the nvidia control panel there should be an option that's something like auto use best graphics processor, take it that's ticked? As nothing should be using the intel graphics if you have the graphic card, it's as if you have it split between two cards currently (Assuming the HDMI is the one plugged into graphics card and not the intel one?)

Hi folks, thanks a lot for your quick response. The laptops are not touch screen, it could well be cheap HDMI splitters though..

 

There is a setting in the NVidia control panel called PhysX, which chooses between graphics cards. By default it is set to auto choose, but even if I set it to one or the other, this makes no difference in terms of output.

It's ironic, but older, lower spec laptops with an HDMI output don't have these problems!

I'm guessing the older ones use the intel graphics though, not a dedicated card.

 

I'm sure there's one on another page. Lemme try to find a laptop. Can you link your physx setup though, there's the pretty lil diagram it does right?

I was advised by NVidia to switch from `auto' to select one or the other graphics card, but this didn't make any difference. I'll try to get a screen grab of the `PhysX' settings - it is a pretty screen :-)

 

 

No screen grab today - observations going on!

Are you using a powered splitter? Quite often the signal isn't good enough on depending on what you're connecting to and needs amplifying - yep even with HDMI.

Obviously this one is VGA.

 

 

Might be worth a try.

 

EDIT: With a splitter, your settings should only pick up 2 screens anyway, not 3.

1 - Laptop screen

2 - Splitter.

 

Why why have you got 3 listed ?

Have you got 2 x HDMI cables plugged into the splitter from the laptop ?

Also thats a good point. I have some Micro-ATX boards with that feature.

That board might be in another model with a touch screen

Sorry it took so long to get back to you on this thread - it's been insane this half term!! I managed to fix this in the end by buying a more expensive splitter which was also an HDMI amplifier! As soon as I put the new splitter in place, it worked just fine in this teacher's classroom.

 

We were using old, cheap Lindy ones - looks like I will have to replace them all.

Well, so much for that - installing a new splitter has worked for one teacher, but for another with an identical HP ZBook Studio it only lasted 3 days and then reverted back to the same old problems as before. Back to HP with a request to re-open the case...
