Copyright images on school website

Just a query, some of my staff are wanting to use Disney characters and other movies like that on our school website. Is this allowed or do you need to seek permission from the film company first?

so simply a no then, i have told them not to do anything but did notice other schools do have music videos and characters on theirs, didnt want to risk doing anything until i found clarification though.

Generally speaking, no they aren't.

 

Copyright material only gets used with the copyright holder's permission.

Since the school website could be classed as marketing I wouldn't say it falls under fair use.

Disney especially hold onto their IP with a firm grip. Generally, if it's a copyright image without a licensing system (like Getty, Shutterstock etc) it'll be a no, but there's no harm in asking. If you say 'but these other sites do it!' expect them to stop doing so pretty quickly.

Has anyone noticed that some image searches reveal film publicity/press pack shots that are watermarked by (like Getty)? How does that work? Or are they just chancing it?
