All the planning, implementation, deploying, sleepless nights and nail biting today we had 230 new Year 7's logon onto Windows 10 for the first time.

Generally went very well but there are issues which seem to be well documented...

  • User Profile Service service failed - click ok and sign in again sorts that one. Saw about 5 of those this morning.
  • Black Screen after domain logon - forcibly restart the machine and try again. Again, had about 3 do that today
  • Stuck on 'Preparing Windows' - again, forced a restart and all works well. Had about 3 do this also.

So, not perfect but workable. There are a few updates still to go out to some of these machines so these may be resolved. Logon times were very respectable and staff generally happy with how it went (aside from the problems we did warn them about).

Tomorrow is the big test when the entire school is back in - so can't relax just yet.

Thanks for the update Pete, out of interest do all these machines have the latest cumulative updates installed?

The black screen issue was apparently fixed with the last patch.

I've found with all the latest updates applied the user profile error goes away.

We had no major issues today too but tomorrow will be main big test when all years are back in.

We're tracking machines that are failing and matching up updates so hopefully get a better idea.

Next issue is that this version of Windows 10 seems to be completely ignoring our Power Plans - machines are locking well before they are supposed too. Teachers are starting to complain.

Day 2 complete - entire school back in today. With the usual, I've forgotten my password issues for this time of year it has generally been successful.

We've notice an issue with one application not running correctly but we've done a tweak to the deployment of that and it is resolved.

Had a couple of reports of the same issues that we noted on the first day, but generally the students go logged on with no major dramas. Usual running around this time of year were we may have not deployed software in the right places or forgotten to setup the icons in the start menus. Tweaked printer deployment as well in places to sort rooms that we've missed.

Only big issue we've seen now is that Staff just aren't logging out (sorry, signing out as its known now in Windows 10). As a result, end of the day and a whole ton of machines are left switched on with and signed in. Some are locked, some aren't. Power Plan still being largely ignored where some machines are remaining on and display active, whereas others are locking too quickly. This is becoming more of a security issue now than just an annoyance.

Largely positive.

Pete,

Which version of 10 are you using? I'm guessing Education v1511 at the moment, or did you leap straight in to 1607?

We're testing 1607 here in preperation for moving to it from 1511 later this year and, while we had some issues with login speeds and start / desktop redirections with 1511, they do not appear to be in any way improved under 1607 like we had hoped they would be :(

Cheers

Good to hear so far not to many problems mullt_man and fragglepete - its been a summer of ups and downs! Went well here as well.

For you guys thinking / moving to win 10 1607 if you have latest build (august 31st update) things are getting stable but if you can wait until after the 19th of this month I would because an update is due to fix and issue with updating

Jumped straight in with 1607 ! Has been a bit dicey in places but I think we're getting there. However, give me a few more days before I say its a complete success.

The Power Plan issue is starting to bug me now.

Day 2 for us too and not had any issues with my 3 and bit IT rooms so far, it is early days though. Our image is relatively small office and cs6 plus a few apps and that's it.

My main issue has been with staff laptops, had a couple of laptops just drop and then refuse to connect to the network restarts seems to fix it but not sure what it is.

We've introduced bitlocker, and we seem to get an error when trying to change the pin on a few of them, I haven't made a note of the error as it's only effected a few so we've left it on a default pin until I've got a spare five mins to take a closer look.

Once the WSUS issue is fixed I'll be happier, I've also noticed with windows 10 it seems to like to download and update graphics drivers so when the teacher comes to dock their laptop it won't duplicate the display as a reboot is pending and we know teachers refuse to reboot their laptops.

I haven't looked at the power options to be honest, if I get a minute I'll have a look tomorrow.

Thanks everyone for their updates

I've got the power plan and locking issue too. I had it set on the computer GP but have tried it on the pupils GP today to see if it sorted it.... annoying thing is its ignoring the disable lock setting too.

I think half my issue is its not waiting for the network before starting.. ignoring that setting too. GPresults says its applying but it aint.

I need to look at this more closely now. Noticed last night that some members of staff were still signed in, screen on, unlocked, SIMS running and logged in but obviously had gone home. Interestingly, the machines that I noticed that had done this had the Start Menu on the screen (so not sure if this was somehow blocking the the Power Plan from working?) http://awscdn.cdngeek.com/images/smilies/smilies/suspicious.gif

May try deleting Power Plans and creating new set in GPPs too see if that helps.

Well we went in brave and updated all 800 workstations/laptops. All staff admin ones, SIMS, FMS etc. Decided to stay on 1511 and to date not had any problems apart from the occasional black screen after login. Have found that as days

go by the workstations get better. I think it is that Windows 10 caches so much. For power off we use Impero at the end of the day and then we also used a small program called Switchoff, this lets you set a task to switch the computer

off when you want. So all our computers are set to switch themselves on between 7 - 7.30 am and then switch off at various times after the school day. On Sat + Sun they switch on but switch off again 30 mins later.

Is anyone finding the start menu just refusing to work on machines?

Its only on pupil machines, am not sure what it is that is breaking it.

Re-image the machine, pefect working start menu a few weeks later get calls about start menu being broken. It doesn't even work for admins.

Not sure if it's after updates? Online seems to point at applocker and blocking cortana.

Other than the start menu issue I've had no other issues.

Am on local profiles, with redirected documents folder, desktop and start menu.

With it giving up on admins who don't have redirected start menus am guessing it's not profile related.

That sounds exactly like the recent DHCP issue caused by the KB3201845 update...

Windows 10 update broke DHCP, knocked users off the Internet

Microsoft has quietly fixed a software update it released last week, which effectively prevented Windows 10 users from connecting to the Internet or joining a local network.

It's unclear exactly which automatic update caused the problem or exactly when it was released—current (unconfirmed) signs point to KB3201845 released on December 9—but whatever it was appeared to break DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol), preventing Windows 10 from automatically acquiring an IP address from the network.

There's also little detail on how many people were affected or why, but multiple cases have been confirmed across Europe by many ISPs. A Microsoft spokesperson has meanwhile confirmed that "some customers" had been experiencing "difficulties" getting online, but that's about it for public statements at present.

However, a moderator on the company's forums has said the fix was included in a patch released on Tuesday called KB3206632. The patch notes include the following line, which seems to indicate a fix:

Addressed a service crash in CDPSVC [Connected Devices Platform Service] that in some situations could lead to the machine not being able to acquire an IP address.

According to a statement from Virgin Media, the issue affects "anyone who wants to access the Internet from a computer with the downloaded Windows 10 software update, regardless of the ISP."

In the time-honoured tradition of IT support, Microsoft's advice begins by telling people to try turning their PCs on and off again:

To receive the update, customers may need to first restart their PCs by selecting Start on the taskbar, clicking the power button, and choosing "restart" (not "shut down"). Additional guidance can be found on our support forum here."

We've been seeing that on about 5% of windows 10 laptop the last few weeks. Decembers updates have been released so hopefully wont be seen again after the christmas break.

It appears only Redstone has had 2 x December updates released, as builds 1507 and 1511 have only had the one.

Fortunately I've deployed neither, given there's days until the end of term. Will wait for January's update.

Can't help but notice Microsoft regularly seem to release duff updates, the last time was in October 2016... moral of the story, leave it at least a week or even longer!

My updates have been a nightmare (and still are)

I initially went with Edu but switched to LTSB so we went round and redeployed 150 desktops, I forced the patches kb3199986, kb3199209 and kb3201860 after its installed windows then rebooted and rolled out cumulative KB3206632 thinking that I was being clever which worked on the majority of them but some wanted KB3206632 to reinstall. This update gets stuck and stoped the WU service from restarting so I had to disable the service, reboot, manually start the install and then restart the service. it would install ok then and the rest of the office updates went through fine.

Then after we finished and shut all the school computers down KB3213522 comes out.

I have no idea why the cumulatives don't work on my network. The logs tell me nothing, there arent any errors in the logs it just goes to 99% then goes backwards to 45% and hangs for days.

Oh I forgot too, I found that the updates wouldnt install unless I deferred the feature updates.

Windows 7 worked like a charm with its updates, never had an issue.

Do you block any modern apps with applocker?

Removed the majority of them with PowerShell. Tried applocker with various degree of success, removing the Apps just seemed a lot cleaner and simpler.

Rumours are the Creators Update will be out in April, has anyone managed to have a look it via the insiders program?

Wondering what level of fun it will bring this time? Broken windows updates, non working start menus....
