Blue_Cookeh Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 (edited) I'm in a bit of a pickle with the way our network is physically setup here and I'm in need of a new switch, specifically it needs: - 48 ports - Some kind of fibre uplink (10G would be nice but it's not necesary if I can bond a couple of 1G fibre ports) - PoE+ - Layer 3 ('lite' is OK, we just need static routing for VLANs). and most of all... at least somewhat quiet!! It'll be going in an office so it has to 'blend' into typical office background noise. Any ideas? We have a HP 2920-48G-PoE+ elsewhere but it's just too loud, this new switch would be replacing a 2530-24G-PoE+. I have a feeling I might be dreaming with these requirements Thanks Edited August 19, 2016 by Blue_Cookeh
Wubbalubbadub Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 I think you would be better, looking for a cab that has noise reduction qualities. Rather than a switch that is specifically "Quiet"
Blue_Cookeh Posted August 19, 2016 Author Posted August 19, 2016 Tbh trying to find this switch is just delaying the inevitable, the cab in question is full and our school has outgrown our infrastructure, time for a real server room methinks. But in the mean time, if there is one out there...
jamesfed Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 Going through your list I was going oooh this guy could do with a 2920 - then I saw you mentioning noise.... I'd have to agree with @MJTayloronline in that your best bet is a cab which can cancel out the noise (although I understand that its not as simple as replacing a cab!). Might it be possible to ditch the layer 3 requirement and do it somewhere other than a full 48 port PoE switch? Maybe at your Firewall?

I can drop the L3, but we're going to end up buying another one within a year if I do, hence I didn't really want to waste money buying two switches. If I'm barking up the wrong tree with those requirements (I suspect I am, massively lol) then I'll go for a 2530-48G-PoE+
njc235 Posted August 20, 2016 Posted August 20, 2016 Have you looked at the 1950? http://m.hp.com/h20195/v2/getpdf.aspx/c04545486.pdf?ver=5
ICTDirect_Dave Posted August 22, 2016 Posted August 22, 2016 I'm afraid my knowledge of how quiet a given switch will be is somewhat limited. Quiet cabs on the other hand. I'd certainly be able to source one of these
Davit2005 Posted August 22, 2016 Posted August 22, 2016 Pretty sure 48 port PoE switch is going to need fans. We have HP 3800 48G PoE+ swtches and they are noisy, from my experience HP switches unless passively cooled seem to be loud.
