Wait...WHAT! Internet Speed!?

Ok so my experience with standard ADSL internet connection is that the speeds are normally... bearable. Maximum I think I've ever seen is around 7mbps. I have always thought my girlfriends internet speeds are fast as I can download a 1080p movie in around 5 minutes where as at my house it can take upward of half an hour!

 

I did a speed test today, now remember this is just standard broadband not Fibre Optic or anything special and these are the speeds

 

Is this weird... it's weird to me! Or is this fairly normal speeds?

you can get up to 24 iirc over just copper 11 is above average but not massively i believe

It looks like you have an ADSL2 connection, if you had ADSL1 you'd be limited to 8mb. There are going to be so many factors which will affect your internet speeds but the primary one is how far you are away from your phone exchange. I have no idea where you live in relation to your exchange but I'm guessing it's a bit of a distance.

 

Other things that may affect it would be the quality of the phone cabling inside your house, the state of your microfilters and whether or not you have your modem plugged into your master socket. P

 

Realistically, the only way your going to improve your speed is to go FTTC or Cable if they're available.

I used to get 17mb on ADSL2 but I lived opposite the towns BT building.

 

Funny thing that when they changed the whole town to Fibre, the 5 houses on our street couldn't et it as they didn't upgrade the bits at the main hub.

My adsl speed is about 18mb normally and an upload of about 1.5mb.

That's interesting, my girlfriend is with BT and I'm with EE (See below for my speeds at time of posting, where everyone is in bed in my neighbourhood and all of my family are asleep.. dreadful!) I'm wondering if I'm limited on ADSL1 then?? It's not too far from my exchange, around a 5-7 minute walk away so not dreadful although we live on a big housing estate so would it be the fact it's shared with the others? FYI, my girlfriend lives out in the sticks with not as near many houses around.

 

Although my modem is plugged into a secondary phone socket with the phone on the main master socket because my mum wanted it in my room (I sleep on the top floor - 3rd floor - and the master socket is on the first floor) so I'm wondering if this also has an impact!?

Well now I'm depressed!!

 

Here's my speed FYI at 11:52 at night without any other devices using the bandwidth and most people in my estate asleep!

 

 

I did call EE about this and they said they couldn't help me as I was using my own Asus DSL-N55U router which I've used for years as the standard EE router was terrible. I checked it wasn't a router problem my end by pinging internally and comparing the numbers, if I'm doing something over LAN it's extremely quick but anything outside of my LAN struggles surely this proves it's EE's bandwidth issue and not ours especially as they advertise and the lady on the phone said we should get between 6-8mbps!! It used to be much faster than this for years before it's only the last 4 months or so has it slowed down! Unfortunately the lady on the phone said she couldn't do anything if I wasn't using their router, she tried giving me their latest router but the ports on it where only 100mbps where as my Asus is gigabit all round so I declined as my house because of how many floors it has requires an additional access point and I don't want to bottleneck that with 100mbps?

Anyway they have been extremely unhelpful.

Your girlfriend is on an ADSL 2 enabled exchange which would deliver up to 24Mb. ADSL2 speeds fall off quite rapidly as distance from the exchange increases. Only some exchanges were upgraded to ADSL2.

 

You could be on a different exchange which was not enabled and are receiving near the top end speed possible for ADSL1 being close to the exchange with 7Mb.

 

You can both have the same area code, be near to each other but on different exchanges. Do an exchange search here https://www.samknows.com/broadband/

Just to follow up, if the normal speed was 7Mb and you are now seeing 3.5Mb plug your router into the BT master socket. Take the two screws out of the master socket and remove the bottom faceplate. Plug the router in to the test socket you can now see and test from that. Try a second filter if speeds are still slow.

 

If you still have a problem at the BT test socket get your phone provider to do a line test. Line noise due to bad joints is most likely cause here.

 

If the BT test socket test is ok look at getting a BT I-Plate, ADSL master socket or just go round and remove all the ring wires from all sockets.

I moved from Sky to EE - so same infrastructure on my Estate etc - my download speeds now vary wildy as do my upload. Sky were always pretty consistent. I do photography and upload a lot of files for clients etc, with Sky it was slow but consistent, with EE it's slow and bombs out alot. Would never go near EE again. :/

Yea....our service is rubbish on bt. TalkTalk was best. We was getting 14mbs with them

 

Just waiting for Gigaclear to install fibre in the area which is hopefully by the end of the month

How did you go about getting them to install the connection - are you in a block of flats managed by one company? We are, and we got an advert from Hyperoptic saying they would install a fiber connection if a certain amount of people indicated an interest, but nothing further seemed to come of it.

If you are confident it is not your router, why not take their router plug it in, get them to fix the problem and then swap it back out? Also, while a second access point on 100Mbs might be a bottleneck if you are running internal services, if mostly the WAP services internet connections, then your bottleneck is not the WAP.

Just gone from Virgin Media at home to Infinity 2. Download speed has reduced from 60Mb/s to 42Mb/s but upload speed has increased to 17Mb/s from about 5Mb/s. I suppose I am about a mile max from the cabinet.

 

The increased upload speed was more important to me so could scrifice a bit of download bandwidth.

 

I always seem to get min of 40Mb/s on Infinity2 rather that the contended Virgin Media service.
